Lived for two years in Greenville for my Master's. I wouldn't reccomend living there unless you're going to school. It's not that great of a city especially when comparing to Raleigh.

Btw, I don't care what anyone says ECU football is so lame. Very hard to watch games live in their stadium, Reminds me of a large high school game.

As someone who is from Greenville and currently lives here now (again), I would not recommend it. Obviously with the job environment you want to take a good job opportunity, but I am very excited about leaving here to go back to Raleigh.

Most bars are low-end and slammed with college kids. Winslows is the exception. It is a nice place, no cover, and a good atmosphere. Most places are chain restaurants although there have been some nice places opening up and you can drive to some of the smaller towns around Greenville to find some surprisingly nice places to eat that are outside of the city. Traffic isn't too bad, its just that people aren't good at driving, specifically in that they lack any urgency. Most people creep around slowly as though they're not sure what they're doing out on the road in the first place. Having such a nice hospital in the area is a plus.

The worst thing is the mindset. It is very closed and most people while somewhat pleasant, aren't very educated. Greenville has a small-town culture in a larger population as it draws heavily on a lot of the communities outside of the city. People there are also highly delusional about ECU and think that the NCSU v ECU rivalry is the biggest thing since Ali-Frazier. Also, EVERYTHING is fucking purple.

In Greenville they sure do think so. I noticed last year at the game that there is some barrel or something that the winner of the game gets?

the guys at work emailed me a picture of the barrel and put purple shit all over my desk. I hope when we win next time the two teams play that we let them keep that fucking barrel. Probably an old keg their art department dressed up prior to the game.

I recently moved back to Greenville after my husband got a job transfer here and that was one of the first things that he commented on. It's taken a lot of time for him to get use to the differences in Raleigh/Cary and Greenville. The great purple sea of customers is one of them.

A year ago you could avoid cover by tipping a buck and telling the door girl you worked at [Insert Random Bar Name]. Now they make you take this stupid fucking 3 hour class and get a "Bouncer Card" that most will ask for as proof. And yes, It literally says Bouncer Card.

Winslow's has a decent beer selection but the service and management knows fuck all about the hospitality industry. They're pretentious as fuck over shitty overpriced food and sub-par espresso. A super cool and laid back taphouse would have been much better than their delusional idea of some "upscale" establishment that's centered two blocks from penny draft night on one side and the ghetto on the other.

"Downtown" is pretty dirty in general. There are a couple of 'acceptable' venues, but for the most part you're looking at a typical grandfathered-in dive property without soap, paper towels, or stall doors.

^That's a pretty spot-on description of Winslows.

It is right down the street from the grime of downtown Gville. Place is usually overcrowded and the service is kind of shitty most of the time. I wouldn't recommend going for food either, very overpriced for what you're getting

That being said, its one of the only places in Greenville that attempts to cater to the young professional crowd, and if you go in the back area of the bar its a bit better and quicker service. Also there is no cover and the beer selection is pretty good.

Yea.

The people from up north go back up north.

The people who go through nursing or medicine can't all work at Pitt Memorial so they either go back home or to another city where the hospitals need people.

The people in Construction Management might stick around but usually go back home to work in family companies.

The people in education get jobs at schools around the greater area but probably don't live in Greenville.

Some of the eastern NC families still believe they're kids need a college degree whether they need it or not. So they end up back at some family business or working on the farm.

There's a chance I may be moving to Greenville soonish, so I wanted to get some input on some good (relatively) areas to live. Anyone have any suggestions that has lived there in the last 3 years?

I was going to live in my boyfriend's neighborhood off Landmark, but after this week's shooting, that's out.

I have stayed in Greenville for the last 3 years. I stay in Forbes woods off of Arlington and consider it the nice side of town. That being said the shooting was very close to my neighborhood but you can look the crime reports up online. Unfortunately pretty much of all greenville sucks.

I stay off 1st street, and it's not terrible....but not super great either. I enjoy walking the greenway but if I did it all over again, I'd probably look at a house on this side of town. I also lived on the Charles Blvd going out towards Vanceboro side of Greenville....it was boring.

I like the being close to downtown...but no so close.

I think I'd like the house setup more.

The shooting thing is completely random, and I assume that most will start going to the new Walmart since it's populated in more of a White, lower mid class to higher class area. That said...a lot of traffic will be shifting to the new side of town..so I'm not sure how that will turn out.


Here area few tips I think are crucial for being safe in Greenville:
-Don't be out at 1-3AM in side streets walking. Drive, get a cab, whatever.
-Be aware of your surroundings
-Get a conceal carry permit, and training
-Make sure your neighbors aren't drug dealers

I lived in G'ville for 8 years. The ONLY thing I miss about it was I rode my bicycle all over both in town and in the sticks. Nice and flat. Oh, and Parkers BBQ sandwiches. not that their BBQ is that great, but I love their slaw.

I get that the shooting last week was random, but that whole area is pretty crappy, according to my boyfriend. He actually said he'd rather I live somewhere else, and then he'd want to move, too.

I think I'm going to look in the area of Evans/Firetower. Any suggestions down there? I also found a cute condo between Arlington and Allen. From what I've been told, southern Greenville is good, but not too close to Winterville, 'cause that's getting ghetto, too.

Went to ECU for a semester and I hate Greenville. As has been previously stated:
-Traffic lights are not timed and you hit every red light
- Dangerous as hell. We'd get campus crime reports several times a day. You don't want to go outside of 4th-14th street area or you run a very real risk of getting mugged.
- Bars are nasty and are all like PB's in Raleigh (they have PB's there too).
- Droves of broke gangster black people hang out downtown every weekend (that's why they have covers at bars, to keep them out)
- The police are crazy as shit and rude.
- No nice places to eat.
- Shitty old mall.

I mean literally, if you are not an undergraduate college student or in the school of Medicine, I would stay the hell away unless you like sitting at home watching movies for fun every weekend.

The re-opening of Peasants seems to be the only redeeming part of downtown to me. There's a band I want to see playing there almost every weekend. Last week we saw Big Something, this Friday there's Big Daddy Love. I could see hanging out there a lot if I move to Greenville. Other than that, I'm not sure there's much of a draw to downtown. I'm a bit of a homebody, though, so I won't mind too much.

My big concern is making friends. I love my boyfriend, but I'm a very social person, and it will kill me to hang out with only him all the time. I don't anticipate making friends with too many co-workers. I'm also almost 30 and over the binge-drinking frat crowd. I think it's going to be crucial to find a good neighborhood so I can have neighbors to chill with.

Winslow's is a decent little bar, at least it was the few times I've been. Haven't been to Peasant's yet but I've heard good things about it. Pretty much every other bar downtown falls into the "bars are nasty" mentioned above. I used to spend entirely too much time at 519, was always fun to leave and see how black my non-black shoes had become.

^^Finding a good neighborhood to socialize with... possible, but hard. The only nice neighborhoods I know of are REALLY nice, and pretty separated from everything else too. Better change your mind and plan to friend some coworkers...

EDIT: And my little brother, who just graduated from ECU, is going from Greenville to Oxford... and even that is seen as a huge improvement.

Winslows is very popular with my friends from HS when they come back into town. There seems to be a relatively successful movement to revitalize the downtown area. My son goes to art camp downtown and the area around Cubbies/Evans/Cotanche is a lot nicer than it use to be with places like Winslows and the Tipsy Teapot moving in.

One good thing about Greenville is the affordability of housing. Buying and renting are a fraction of what they are in the Raleigh area.

I was going to rent like a 950sqft lofted townhouse for $425/month off of Allen Road a couple of years ago. The place used to be home to med students and nurses and such, but at that point the property values may have fell and the owners would probably drop the rent. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't great either. I had the lease signed and GUC came around 9am to turn the water on. I went to work, came back at 6pm and the kitchen ceiling was soaked. The upstairs toilet had a leak and I got stuck like 500 bucks. I was still staying at my other place for another 2-3 weeks, so I thought I was being fair when requesting that the carpet be replaced since they didn't have to put me up in a hotel.

Drafted a pretty legit letter, the property management company (Stay away from Keystone) freaked out and through my job at the time I even had a mortgage company go to bat for me who knew the owner personally. Best I got was that first month's rent back, they kept my deposit and my motivation to bring them to small claims court eventually dwindled to the point where it didn't even matter anymore. It was a killer setup for 1 or 2 people with the only potential downside being your bedroom was of course lofted, so if you had company over you wouldn't have much privacy.

Yeah they handle such a massive percentage of rental property it's ridiculous. My best experiences were when property mgmt companies could be bypassed altogether.

I think my buddy's duplex is up for rent this month, but they use a management company and it's in Winterville. The last tenants caused a couple grand in damages and they just finished replacing carpet/laminate/paint.

^^I feel that's true of a lot of news sources though. I mean WRAL is based in the triangle, the most progressive part of the state, and their GOLO comments are off the charts. Greenville's city council was one of the few cities in eastern NC that passed an anti-amendment 1 resolution last year. I think having the university there helps make it stand out in the east somewhat.
