I was a minority during elementary school, but that doesn't give me any right to speak on behalf of a group of people I'm not apart of. I have no idea what it is like to be a minority and I never will.

Also, I don't understand how you can be upset about the word "nigger" but then words like "fag" and "bitch". Sounds hypocritical to me. If you want change you gotta be apart of it.

I always thought that black people should be more concerned with reality than perception. 65 years ago Japanese people were viewed as little more than monkeys. Nowadays the stereotypes are that they are great at math, love videogames and have crazy fetishes. Their reputation is much improved.

Meanwhile the black community has embraced inner-city gangsta rap culture, which teaches black kids to act like assholes, glorify crime and treat women like bitches. Big surprise that other races are gonna look at them as assholes. For those of you who are indignant about being judged based on the way other black people act, well tough shit. That's just human nature and it's just not gonna change.

It's not all that absurd. White kid growing up in Harlem would be a minority in that community. A Korean living in Japan would be a minority. Etc etc etc.

So...here's a question:

Do y'all think NCSU does have a particularly intolerant atmosphere for people of color?

I never witnessed it myself as a student, other than people making jokes about the smell of the King Village bus.

Personally, I have never experienced racism. I understand their culture better, but I still can't be their spokesperson or tell them how they should feel. I grew up a middle class white girl that happened to go to school with a lot of black and hispanic kids. But at the end of the day, I was still white and they weren't. I'm glad I got to experience another culture, but that doesn't mean I can speak for them.

Also, I believe this "Brick" book is suppose to represent what the university is proud of and nothing derogatory towards anyone should ever be in that book. It's like saying "Look NCSU is cool because you can say shit like nigger and the university promotes it."

I think that NCSU has a misplaced its priorities in endorsing a culture of separation.

I'm pretty sure that there's no "African American Student Center" and associative programs at UNC. I remember when I was sent to the AA Symposium in 1999 - my first thought was "why the fuck are they forcing us into this category to begin with?" I went to a high school that was 99% black. I came to a school where, at the time, less than 10% of the population was black. I didn't really need to be told that shit was going to be different. I can't imagine what the black kids who had spent their formative years growing up in a majority white school system thought about it.

Wait, yes I can, because several of them said it to me: "This is fucking stupid."

Highlighting a group instead of trying to integrate them is easily the worst way to foster a healthy environment.

People are allowed to be pissed that someone would write dumb crap in the tunnel. They are free to express how it makes them feel. They could go and write out their feelings on the tunnel if they so please. But that doesn't mean the tunnel should be banned.

Regardless of if you've personally experienced racism or not, shouldn't make a difference. You have a right to whatever opinion you please.

People seem to be taking two separate issues and treating them as though we're taking about one. It seems everyone agrees the publication editor made a moronic mistake and the picture shouldn't be in there. The disagreement lies in censorship of the tunnel itself.

Yeah, UNC-CH's black cultural center is way awesome.

I wonder if they do a sort of semi-required orientation for black students there though.

I never knew State had one (the symposium)...that's kinda crazy.

You're too racist to avoid having a racist premise in your statement. Japan is a country with its own national culture. The "black community" is not a country, culture or anything but a label by racists. Inner city American culture is just that, inner city american culture and is not unique to blacks. It just so happens that in most of America, blacks were force to be poor and still make up most of the poor, inner city American communities to this day. If you go to Canada, or some Northern cities like Detroit or Boston, there are large, poor, inner city communities that are not predominantly black but still have the inner city american culture that comes with the rough life. These were areas where whites weren't all elevated and blacks weren't all held down as much historically.

Theres Japanese culture and then there are American cultures. Blacks that are in affluent areas are no different than other Americans in affluent areas. Skin color doesn't carry its own culture.

Shut the damn tunnel. Problem solved no more racism, sexism or bad press. This problem has such a simple solution. As Mr. Kitchen said

Quote :

We have tolerated this bullshit repeatedly over the last few years.

Its really sad that a school as good as state will come to be known as a bigoted hate school and a endorser of hate speech.

At the end of the day I really don't give a flying fuck about this school or 95% of the people at it. College is a means to an end so paint all the racist bullshit you want, I'll get this degree and never look back.

I went to NCSSM and while it was certainly a diverse little friendly island, there were about as many black people as mexicans in russia. Just cause you made it through walltown on the way to northgate doesn't mean you automatically get a n****r pass

That doesn't mean that it can't be multiracial, and I don't seriously doubt his claim that it is.

But everybody gets the issue with black Americans wrong. Latinos in this nation right now, for instance, are fundamentally different. They have more mobility unless I read this wrong. Blacks, as an entire group, actually are fundamentally disadvantaged due to historical reasons. Otherwise they would be like the Irish, who were once a marginalized minority but nobody gives a flip anymore.

Minorities at the NCSSM don't just have upward mobility, many of them are at the top. Nobody is crying for Berkley's 50% Asian population, and it has nothing to do with having a national culture behind them like the E Man was trying to argue. They're rich, what more do you need?

Affirmative Action does exactly this with multiple groups. Is there something wrong with that program? Should the NAACP be outlawed and disbanded?

I 100% agree with you Nick. To truly overcome racism, a country and it's citizens must become truly colorblind. Along with it, let go of the programs that promote racism in the name of eliminating it.

That will never work. As long as certain looking people are predominantly poor people will continue to confuse correlation with causation. In our economic system the poor can't simply integrate into the rest of societies class levels as a whole. Black people were made poor by white people and then it was turned off. Problem is, we have a system that keeps the poor poor so something has to be done about that or people will continue to believe that the characteristics poor people have are due to their skin color.

^ You're correct but target your argument to a strawman. If someone is fearful and acts fearfully around black people (or just more-so), that action only requires the existence of the correlation to be justified. Of course, this is setting the other situational factors aside.

You seem to be arguing against genetic racism, which is an entirely different issue.

I have always found it funny that a lot of the same people complaining are the ones I hear on campus using the damn word at least three times a day...

Maybe it's just my whiteness shining through, but if you want to complain about something perhaps you should stop saying it yourself.

Furthermore, has it already been ruled out that the word in the tunnel was an excerpt from a rap song?

If it makes anyone feel better, "The Brick" is pretty much ignored and most freshmen immediately throw it away. It had almost zero circulation within the university before they started giving it out to freshmen at orientation.

^^^ Is there any argument at all that white people can NOT get upset at black people for using the N-word? Is anyone saying that you should not turn to those people using it and say "please stop, that offends me"?

Really, has anyone or will anyone say that?

Heck, I'm pretty sure the KKK has some words for the Aryan race that are not accepted as PC.
