Reports of "several pets" being in one of the apartments.

Source: WRAL article comments.

Plausible. Sad, too.

Fire under control means the forward progress of the fire has been stopped and the remaining fire
can be extinguished with the on-scene resources; it does not mean that the fire is completely
extinguished.

The more you know......

Still a long evening ahead for the RFD FFs (and EMS Personnel on scene).
I hope for rain but not T-Storms to protect everyone there.

"A massive fire destroyed at least six apartment buildings at Gorman Crossing Tuesday afternoon as fire fighters worked to contain the blaze.

The Raleigh Fire Department arrived to the complex, located at the corner of Avent Ferry Road and Gorman Street, just before 5:30 p.m., according to Jim Sughrue, spokesperson for the Raleigh Police Department. At 6:30 p.m., the fire had already affected a dozen units.

The fire was said to be started in the kitchen, but the source of the blaze could not be absolutely confirmed. "

Maybe the curry comment wasn't far off

But wow, six buildings!! That's one hell of a fire.

I made the mistake of trying to drive up and through this.

The intersection of Gorman and Avent Ferry is completely blocked off, had to turn around and take Trailwood (which is where they also blocked the rest of Avent Ferry).

I live right in front of this building (thought it was mine for a while). any questions let me know.

^^^It wasnt six buildings, it was one building, atleast 10 townhouses. Fire crews are still out looking for hot spots. Red Cross is currently on my front patio with the people

A cool story though, one of the girls was freaking out because her cat was in the apt. Hers was one of the hardest hit apts, and after it was pretty much extinguished, a firefighter ran out carrying a drenched, but alive kitten. They gave it oxygen, and pretty soon it looked fine.

pictures from my door step

still havent heard the cause of it yet. However, several of the buildings in this complex have burnt down because of electrical fires associated with copper (?) wiring from the old buildings

apparently another one caught on fire bc of a kitchen fire back a couple of years ago.

But I also heard from one of the firefighters that several of the building in the complex have burnt down in the past 10 or 20 years

everyone has left, except for one firetruck sitting out infront. I guess its making sure something doesnt ignite back up...wonder how long i has to sit there for

i lived in GSC for a few years

my apartment (more of a townhome, off Gorman/Octavia) was slanted. like if you put a ball on a flat surface, it would always roll in the same direction. it wouldn't shock me if instead of fixing an electrical problem they just did a half-measure and left. their maintenance crew is suspect to say the least.

so fires do not surprise me.

also they don't have fucking gutters on the roofs. when it rains, you get crushed with buckets of rain from the roof.

YES. omg. they have shitty gutters, but when I moved out in May, they had little vines and stuff growing all out of them. They wouldn't hold rain and we would have a little river outside when we had storms.

Our power would cut out on multiple occasions and we'd have to flip the switch, and it wasn't on overload or anything.

My parents lived there in the 80s. Her response when I told her: "They just need to stop renting it out, get all their shit out of that place, and torch the rest of it so this doesn't happen again. It was a dump when we lived there, and not much has changed."

Quote :
"RALEIGH, N.C. — The property manager of a Raleigh apartment building that caught fire Tuesday said he was surprised by the blaze because his company has been aggressive in updating appliances, including air conditioning units.

Firefighters say that an electrical disconnect box, which acts like a circuit breaker, on an air conditioning unit sparked the fire.

John Solie, property manager of Gorman Crossing, said Wednesday that his company is in the process of installing all new appliances, including air conditioning units, throughout the complex. Solie said he didn't know if the unit that caught fire had new or older-model equipment.

He said he’ll work with the fire marshal to learn more about what caused the blaze and how he can ensure that air conditioning equipment at the complex is safe.

In 2004, a fire started in a different building at the same complex, at 3801 Gorman St., because of an air conditioning unit. Solie said that his company checked all of the units at the time and replaced outdated equipment. He said they continue to renovate and upgrade apartments as they become vacant.

All 12 units inside the building that burned were damaged. Nine were a total loss.

About 20 residents were displaced. The Red Cross and North Carolina State University, where many of the residents are students, are working to make sure the displaced residents have somewhere to stay.

One firefighter was taken to the hospital to be treated for a back injury Tuesday. No other injuries were reported.

All renters at the complex are required to buy renter's insurance, Solie said."
