stategrad100 would be partly wrong. Gold does not tarnish nor is is susceptible to bioaccumulation.

Example, this 1965 photograph of a treasure diver straight from the bottom:

With still shining gold coins after hundreds of years submerged.

Everyone else is pretty much right on, the gold would be used ornamentally or only in thin non-structural plating. That and there is almost no way it has that much gold in/on it. Gold is non-reactive in seawater so corrosion and 'look' would never diminish. Though you would be correct in that it would have to be sealed somehow as it is vulnerable to impact and physical abrasion.

^ gold plating in a kinetic environment is susceptible to bioaccumulation though

the hull is coated with gold and will incur knicks, cuts, scratches, and the underlying material will allow for sea life to get a foot-hold

designer's other projects:

"He started his bespoke upgrade service in 2002 with his wife Katherine and has since applied his golden touch to all sorts of objects.

His Aquavista Panoramic Wall Aquarium, for instance, is made from 68kg of 24ct gold and is yours for a cool £3million.

Then there’s Mr Hughes’ iPhone 4, worth a mind-blowing £5m.

The Apple device is wrapped in 500 cut diamonds, including two interchangeable diamonds which fit over the 'home' button - a single cut 7.4 carat pink diamond and a rare 8 carat single cut flawless diamond that are together worth more than £4m.

An even bigger diamond still is to be found in his luxury liquor bottle. The D' Amalfi Limoncello Supreme is home to an 18.5 carat diamond, one of the world’s rarest. It’s no wonder that you’ll need to spend £27million before you can take a swig from it.

Other items adorned with precious metals and diamonds that he’s produced include laptops, beds, cars and even a suit."

let's put a huge ass diamond on everyday objects and say the object costs millions

I, too, have done some naval architecture (namely biofouling control) shit.

Quote :
"If I have to explain to you why corrosion resistant gold doesn't need a sacrificial cathode then I automatically win the internet."

I misread your statement. It was correct; I thought you were saying that for some reason gold would be penalized without a sacrificial cathode.

Quote :
"the hull is coated with gold and will incur knicks, cuts, scratches, and the underlying material will allow for sea life to get a foot-hold"

This is true. The gold itself would be inert to sea critters, but damage to it would result in areas susceptible to biofouling.

Quote :

this.

apply this to everything you said. You really don't know one way or the other. "

Translated: "I don't know what I'm talking about so I'm going to avoid any further discussion"

Clearly you may know something about this stuff, so try and actually discuss it.

As for an example source:

http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.1080/08927014.2010.542809
"Economic impact of biofouling on a naval surface ship"

http://www.copper.org/applications/cuni/txt_asheathing_shiphulls_offshore.html
"Review of Copper-Nickel Alloy Sheathing of Ship Hulls and Offshore Structures"

I mean I think we're saying the same thing now, anyway. Gold is resistant to sea water and bioaccumulation, but shit for a structural or physically protective metal. In other words the use of a gold hull is pretty damn stupid.

Another interesting thing is that this gold hull may violate many new environmental restrictions which limit the use of heavy metals in biofouling coatings.

Probably saved a lot of money using Malaysian labor.

It was built with flesh and blood

It wasn't built by any god

The weight of those materials alone is staggering. Not planning on doing the Archimedes math, but I doubt it would float.

As fas as this boat goes, I have no problem with the wretched excess. if you can afford it and that's what you want, go for it, dude. i only have a problem with the fact that all that weight would make it substantially less functional.

I say tinsel-strength because I never had to write it out

I guess the shit's so simple that I got hired to do shit like this without ever even having to be formally trained in it

What makes you money isn't always what you're good at or what you want to do.

And what you want to do doesn't always make you money

I'll take my tinsel-strength and my cash

fuckers

and even engineers know I'm right

The thing that makes it bad is that it's a complete waste - the gold does nothing to improve functionality. Any aesthetic value could have been done with a lot less actual gold.

Threat of bioaccumulation depends on the thickness of the plating and what the gold is alloyed with.

^some. i did the math (approximating the hull as an ellipsoid with semimajor axes of 15m, 8m, and 8m, and it can probably float)

unless i made a typo..

^ this is where the ol' college try is yet another epic fail

hulls are not ellipsoids - they're hydrofoils

an ellipsoidal shape actually has more drag through the water, which is why there's a thing called a transom

So this is why the value of gold has been going up...

Better sell your gold now. Demand will apparently begin going down immediately!

I was just computing buoyancy, not anything concerning movement.

also, it was a very rough approximation, i know.
