I've been mildly following this saga since they got rid of their music program and I have to wonder if the college regrets hiring this woman. I thought it was particularly sleezy that many of the girls didn't find out that their major was getting canned until they returned for spring semester. You'd think they could take the 5 minutes to fart out an email about it.

I think this is a terrible decision and will quicken their demise. Why would any man go to Peace when there's so many other options in the Triangle? Instead they should have bolstered what they were already good at and then added some "real world" degree such as HR admin and ESL education.

To bring in some extra monies, they should have hired one or two international recruiters and recruited the hell out of overseas students. This strategy has helped a lot of other small colleges find a new income source that has allowed the college to survive and even expand.

lollers...from the Golo crowd:

OMG why would you ever spend that much money at a school with such little recognition?? At least spend it somewhere where you can earn the money back through a useful degree.

read some facebook page where, according to history, William Peace wanted the college to always be a ladies college or he wanted the land to be handed back over to his family

i wonder if he will haunt the grounds now

I think the idea is to trick more girls into going to Peace.

How many girls out there really want to go to an all girl school? If they can say “hey we’re not all girls” i bet they’d get far more new girl applicant than guy ones.

Not to mention guys need a school they can buy a degree from too.

I'd be surprised if the difference would be enough to make up for the budget gaps. Why go to Peace for a degree in social work when you can go to UNC for less and have a more reputable name attached to the degree?

I really do think advertising to international students would have been the smarter way to go. Women's colleges are still very popular in some countries and they had a largely untapped market there. International students usually pay more than domestic students as well, helping their bottom line.

this whole co-ed thing must be getting blown way out of proportion by just a few. ~150 years of history and they could only bring less than 100 ladies to their protest... Even WRAL helped them out saying it was hundreds...

Unfortunately, instead of showing up to protest, Peace College needed their alum to open up their checkbooks to keep their tradition alive which they failed to do...

Hmmm, I seem to recall this argument being made by my AM, except we got slapped down by the Supreme Court, not by the economy.

I love Peace. And I loved my years there. But they stated, clearly in their email that WENT OUT BEFORE THE PRESS RELEASES that only 2% of college bound women want an all women education. 98% do not, add that with fiscal problems, a plateauing attendance and changes have to be made.

I do feel secure in knowing that girls in North Carolina who do want that all women education will be able to have it, just not at my Alma Mater. So that gives me peace of mind.

Also, as a member of the Peace College Chamber Singers (2001-2005) seeing them get rid of the music department for a emphasis on a new musical theatre major with new professors etc, has been really hard and sad for me. It's so easy just to blame the new president, but everything that happens is also decided by the Board of Trustees and with this latest decision they voted unanimously.

1. get out your husband's checkbook
2. write a check to that day care for post-adolescent women that you call a college
3. write something witty on the memo line like "better dead than coed"

"Peace alums, students cut off donations

Alumnae and current students at Peace College in Raleigh said they are suspending or canceling donations to the school in light of the administration's decision to change the college's name and admit male students next year.

"I think by suspending or canceling gifts, it's one way to send a message," alumnae Karen Sinclair said Tuesday. " The way some things have rolled out, that's really the only way we've had to express our concerns."

Peace College President Debra Townsley said the changes to the 154-year-old women's college, which will be called William Peace University starting in the fall, boil down to economics. She said admitting men is just another measure to bring in more money.

Students and graduates say they feel left out of the decisions and don't want to support a school that is changing it's focus.

Sinclair said donors aren't necessarily averse to change, but want to be part of the process.

"You want to feel like the gift, as well as the gift of your time, is going to support a shared mission," Sinclair said. "With that mission changing so significantly, we all have to reassess if this is indeed where we want to put our resources."

Sinclair, a donor for the past 10 years, said she has suspended her monetary gift to the school.

"Nearly everyone I have talked to have stopped all giving due to the secrecy and general lack of regard for alumnae by Townsley," Class of 2000 alumna Jamie Averette Mitchell said.

Tildsley Clifford, a 2008 graduate of Peace College, said she won't be donating to the school anymore because of the changes.

"What little I do have will not go to William Peace University. My alma mater is Peace College. Why would I donate to a school that is not printed on my diploma?" Clifford said.

An online petition to remove Townsley started before the announcement of the name change. Organizers would not say how many signatures the petition has, but said alumnae response has been swift and encouraging."

http://www.wral.com/news/education/story/9945224/

I'd argue that it's more about keeping a shitty school open than it is about making more money, but I'm not going to argue economics with anyone who graduated from Peace College.

My cousin graduated about 3 years ago from Peace and is very upset by it. Unlike a lot of the previously mentioned idiots that went there though, she worked hard and got out of there in 3 years, and then went on and got her Masters at a "real" school, NCSU. So at least one of her degrees is worth something.

She and quite a few others hated Townsley after she let go some very loved and respected older professors and cut those degree programs. Apparently the President only thinks of the students as an afterthought, and they never find out about any of this shit until its on WRAL. They would really like to be informed about shit, but for whatever reason they don't get any communication from the administration at Peace. That is not going to be encouraging for anybody to want to go there, male or female.

Yeah...my wife and I went there the other day to visit some folks and she also wanted to get a couple things from the bookstore while they still carry "Peace College" merchandise. Every person we talked to that day on campus is against the change and the way things are happening around there. (and we talked with students, employees, etc...)

Everything about the new transition is shady.
According to N&O article today:
Quote :
"The new one, with the William Peace University name, was registered with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office on March 9, just weeks after college officials insisted the coed plan was not in the works.
"

Also, they kept saying the transition to WPU would not happen until the 2012-2013 school year, yet they already have the banners up on campus and at the front entrance.
The only thing the new president keeps saying is that lame "only 2% of women look at this college" blablablabla
It's like it is the only stat that lady can come up with.

^It's important to note the difference between the name change and the change to go coed. The two are only linked in the timing of the announcement. The name change reflects the university accreditation, submitting the name change in March is inline with intentions to create a graduate program.

From my understanding, the Fall 2012 timeline is for becoming coed NOT the name change.

Minka, that's probably what they say and want it to look like but I don't buy it at all.

The way this new administration has handled everything, I have no doubt that the name change strictly coincides with the choice to go co-ed...both of which they denied and denied for the longest time.
Even all the news stories mention it as:
Quote :
"Peace College will become William Peace University and begin admitting men in the fall of 2012.
News&Observer
"

I know you can read both of those changes together as happening in 2012 or just the "admitting men" part and the first part is indepedent...

The employees that we talked to at the college said the name change would not take place until may/june 2012. Now all of a sudden, there are new banners and merchandise coming in January that will say WPU.
So either the employees just don't know anything or they were in the dark once again about all the changes.

It was sad today when I drove past and saw a bunch of girls protesting in front of Peace. Even sadder were all of the misspellings and grammatical errors on their picket signs.

Saddest of all was the lone guy protesting with them because he thought he might get laid.
