Some people just lose all hope.

Once you reach a certain point, I don't think you even realize or care what you're putting in your body.

Life can feel so empty that food is their only refuge.

true. i definitely think there's a lot of deep-seeded psychological stuff going on at that point as well. whether its a food addiction, the loss of hope, thinking it's okay, etc.

i would consider "healthy pudge" as someone who is active but isn't a complete stick. they might have a fall roll when sitting down or leaning over but it doesn't necessarily mean they're fat by any means. a lot of it is also how the person carries their weight. i carry my weight around my mid-section so i feel like i always appear bigger than i might be because of this - and it's only exaggerated when i sit down.

Very low calorie diets have been shown in some studies to be correlated with longer lifespan. Something about reducing free radicals, I think (or I might just be making that up).

But also: http://www.breitbart.com/article.php?id=CNG.c7aaeb7940626693fa418a1eab2291f6.81 regarding the chubbiness thing.

Correlation/causation and whatnot ...
