Wait a minute.....This is chit chat, the thread title relates to Japan....and no one has brought up tentacle rape yet?
8/8/2011 2:08:17 PM
1 WORD NUKE
8/8/2011 2:08:58 PM
They started it.They also were willing to fight to the last person. They had begun training civilians with bamboo spears to try to kill as many invading soldiers as possible. Surrender without a shot at killing the enemy is/was considered a massive shame. Once the emperor realized that the US could wipe out large portions of population without a fight the only way out short of futile suicide was surrender.
8/8/2011 2:19:04 PM
I sometimes wonder what the world would be like if we hadn't developed nukes in time and had to launch a land assault on Japan. That shit would have been unreal.
8/8/2011 3:03:58 PM
^
8/8/2011 3:08:11 PM
Well yeah, there's that, but I meant more after it was all said and done and the dust settled. Would they have made Japan a commonwealth, a territory, or a state
8/8/2011 3:11:21 PM
I feel like the invasion would have been a long affair that would give the Soviets an opportunity to attack northern Japan from their territory in China under the guise of opening a two front war to expedite japanese collapse. Ultimately this would have lead to a divided Japan similar to Germany or Korea, costing the US an important ally in the western Pacific and providing another flashpoint for WWIII.
8/8/2011 3:17:49 PM
Because they're too busy doing land reenactments of "Fat Man" and "Little Boy".
8/8/2011 3:29:27 PM
Have they made a porno called "Fat Man and Little Boy" yet?
8/8/2011 3:30:19 PM
We are all united under Anime.
8/8/2011 3:55:28 PM
There are some dumbass people in this thread. Its amazing to think that some of you are college educated.

^^most people on this forum are ideological liberals, what do you expect?
8/8/2011 4:10:44 PM
8/8/2011 4:19:55 PM
^^^ I'm saying this all happened over 60 years ago, what's done is done, but for Japan to sit there and whine about how unfair the bombs were and that they did nothing wrong from 1910-1945 is a bit of a stretch.
8/8/2011 7:01:38 PM

Not at all surprised by this thread. A bunch of U.S. citizens defending the atrocious acts of their government, after being taught (by government schools) that those acts were defensible. This is exactly how things play out when state violence is used on civilian populations. The U.S. military dropped not one, but two nuclear bombs. Why? Because the U.S. wanted unconditional surrender. Winning wasn't enough. The U.S. wanted it all, and our leaders at the time were willing to kill as many innocent civilians as it took to get that outcome. It's never okay to intentionally kill civilians. Period. It's morally fucking wrong. The fact that the majority of Americans still defend U.S. actions during this time is shameful.
8/8/2011 7:16:17 PM
the south koreans pretty much hate everyone.

mr. joshua is absolutely right, there was a serious concern for russia getting involved in the pacific theater after how everything went down in europefor the record this has been an ongoing debate for decades and calling people stupid just because they hold a differing viewpoint just shows your narrow mindedness
8/8/2011 9:45:08 PM
nothing new herereasonable debate stifled by jingoism
8/8/2011 9:47:44 PM
We did the Japanese a huge favor by dropping these bombs. It would have been far worse for both of our countries if we didn't.
8/8/2011 9:49:45 PM
I always cringe when it's time to teach kids how to do research papers and someone comes to me with this topic.

Japan had it coming. The civilian argument holds no weight. They attacked Pearl Harbor while they were still at the negotiation table. Now I just wish we would have nuked Iraq and Afghanistan. Why waste American lives when we have the weapons and technology to end wars without putting troops on the ground.
8/8/2011 11:52:22 PM
there was never a war to end in iraq or afghanistan. we created both wars.
8/9/2011 12:08:40 AM
Says who?Afghanistan was a safe haven for Osama. Add Iran to the list. We should nuke them too. (Atleast cut off aid)Iraq was unfinished business. We owed them one.I find it entertaining that Americans seem to think there are morals and "rules" to war. If Japan had had a nuke in WWII you better believe Hawaii would have been blown off the earth. You soft hearted idiots are the reason events like 9/11 take place. There should be no rules in a war.]
8/9/2011 12:11:49 AM
I thought the dropping of the atom bombs on Japan was a show of force to scare Russia. Ending the war was a side effect...
8/9/2011 12:37:46 AM
8/9/2011 12:37:54 AM
^^ Naw, the scaring of the Russians was the bonus. The war had to end one way or the other and a land invasion would have been costly, both in casualties and dollar bucks.
8/9/2011 8:39:45 AM
8/9/2011 8:55:54 AM
But then Godzilla defends Japan from all kinds of even worse monsters.See, they love us.
8/9/2011 9:15:35 AM
So in a way, Japan kind of owes us one.
8/9/2011 10:01:34 AM
History is written by the victors.
8/9/2011 10:36:31 AM
Hence why there is no major in French history.
8/9/2011 10:39:21 AM
I'm sure there is a college somewhere in the US that offers it as a major
8/9/2011 10:42:09 AM
so does vietnam owe us a nuke?
8/9/2011 10:43:13 AM
There's a saying from the Meiji period along the lines of "If you win you are the official army, if you lose you are the rebels."Tojo repeated something along these lines before his execution.
8/9/2011 10:43:23 AM
In 185 battles that France had fought over the past 800 years, their armies had won 132 times, lost 43 times and drawn only 10. That is a better military record than England.
8/9/2011 10:43:52 AM
I bet 100 of those battles were games of "Risk".
8/9/2011 10:47:30 AM
^^ How many of those were french people vs other factions of french people? They haven't done anything to impress me since the Battle of Tours.
8/9/2011 10:58:19 AM
They've also had a terrible showing in the NCAA tournament.
8/9/2011 11:06:30 AM
^^ Taking over most of Europe a couple hundred years ago was pretty impressive.
8/9/2011 11:11:24 AM
Anybody can take over a continent when your daily fear is obtaining the plague from your pet rat "Flufferkins".
8/9/2011 11:14:25 AM
Then why didn't Poland ever take over the continent?
