they musta had a nice location since ruth's chris took it over. I definitely think chain restaurants are a downer though. that whole new north hills expanded a little too fast just before the economic slump. i stayed in that renaissance for like 60 bucks a night or something a few months after it opened and the place was a ghost town. 8/11/2011 11:14:33 AM

Is that Korean place still open on Hillsborough St? Its upstairs where the old Jamaician place used to be...I think its called Waba and they had Korean TV on all the time. It was awesome 8/11/2011 11:45:04 AM

It's still there but it's crap now. I went there for lunch a couple months ago and was really disappointed. Maybe it's because I have more experience with Korean food now. 8/11/2011 11:54:06 AM

The one I'm thinking of closed in the 90s and it was in a Belks, which is now condos. It was a cafeteria.
It appears that they've revived the name at a similar location, but it's a bar. http://events.triangle.com/raleigh-nc/venues/show/499341-capital-room-downtown 8/11/2011 11:56:55 AM

^ The Capital Room cafeteria moved to the Ramada on Blue Ridge.
The place that's referenced by the address in your link was a lovable dive bar that had nothing to do with the cafeteria, and also closed at least two years ago. It's Isaac Hunter's on the Fayetteville side now, and the Salisbury side has been turned into a potential retail space. 8/11/2011 12:54:41 PM

+1 on Greenshields and Hard Times. Both of them were really good. And it's sad that nothing has opened in the "anchor" location of City Market in the six? seven? years since Greenshields closed. Also, while I was never that impressed with Hard Wok (I ate there frequently because it was cheap and not bad, but it wasn't great either) I do miss Royal China up at Millbrook and Atlantic.

At one point there were 3 or 4 Lucky 32 locations--they had one in Winston-Salem and one in Raleigh. The W-S one closed and the Raleigh one moved to Cary. The Greensboro one is still open on Westover, and it's still one of my favorite stops when I'm in town. Good "upscale southern" food that uses a lot of seasonal ingredients and a section of the menu that changes by season, plus a good beer list. 8/11/2011 12:59:17 PM

Oh? What's in the old main building then (I haven't been there in probably over a year)
And, just FYI (not to anyone in particular), the Greensboro Lucky 32 is the original one and has been open for 20+ years.

I miss Hard Times on Glenwood.
Also Mr. Dunderbak's in Crabtree. It was nice to be able to grab a decent sandwich and a beer at the mall.
Blue Moon that used to be on Hillsborough St. had some pretty good stuff too the couple of times I ate there. 8/11/2011 4:23:38 PM

Aha, Mr. Dunderbak's! I miss that place too. The one in Greensboro at Four Seasons held on for several years longer than the Crabtree location, but it, too, closed a couple of years ago.
And how could I forget Blue Moon--while it wasn't eastern NC barbecue (and that may have sealed its fate) it was pretty tasty nonetheless. Big sandwiches too, and excellent cornbread.

I used to like to go to the one in Stonecrest in Charlotte in highschool... but that is because they would serve booze to anyone who flashed them a PHS ID (which I didn't have, but I was with people who did)

That was a separate entrance to the space in the bowling alley to the far left of the building. Not sure if that used to be the bar, or a coffee shop type thing, or a separate dining area from the central restaurant (I've never seen it open in 13 years in the NCSU area). 8/12/2011 1:04:07 PM
