I've already Googled their version to try to understand your point of view.

Why does it matter who wrote the song?

Otis Redding wrote "Respect." Doesn't mean he did it better than Aretha Franklin.

"Lightning Crashes" by Live
"Brick" by Ben Folds
"Funeral March" by Chopin - can't believe nobody mentioned this
"Bohemian Rhapsody" by Queen
"Frances Farmer Will Have Her Revenge on Seattle" and pretty much all of In Utero - Nirvana

This song is way more sad than Brick...to me, at least. Used to be a go-to breakup song when I was younger and lamer. Not even sure what it's about...

Evaporated - Ben Folds

Apologize for the shitty user submitted video. Official video doesn't exist.

Goodbye, my lover.

Goodbye, my friend.

You have been the one. You have been the one for me.

Goodbye, my lover.

Goodbye, my friend...

"Here You Me" by Jimmy Eat World makes me cry like every time I hear it, but I associate it with one of my high school friends dying so ...... I probably find it sadder than most people

And I will second "Hallelujah" by Jeff Buckley

for some reason "the war" and "joining the army" by lucero always depress the fuck outta me in a surprising way.

when i hear them i always think back to the couple times my grandmother's brother, grandfather (other side), and great grandfather opened up about the stuff they saw during wwII. they saw some fucked up stuff and it still affected them till the day they passed. my great grandfather is still alive and let out a little more last time i visited him. such conversations def give you a whole new perspective on not just how they lived, but your own life.

Saddest song ever?

Death Cab For Cutie - What Sarah Said

Aside from "She Stopped Loving Her Today", no other song on this list has shit on the above.

^ I was about to post that...

Death Cab for Cutie "Transantlanticism" is also a very sad one...

Quote :
"The rhythm of my footsteps crossing flatlands to your door have been silenced forever more.
The distance is quite simply much too far for me to row"

Oh add Offspring "The Kids Aren't Alright" , Everclear "Father of Mine" and Evanescence "My Immortal"

Evanescence "Forgive Me" is probably the saddest song in my book... Maybe it's because I've got some personal attachment to it. Regardless, it belongs on the list.

I'm just going to let the entire song speak for itself.....

Quote :
""What Sarah Said"

And it came to me then that every plan is a tiny prayer to father time
As I stared at my shoes in the ICU that reeked of piss and 409
And I rationed my breaths as I said to myself that I'd already taken too much today
As each descending peak on the LCD took you a little farther away from me
Away from me

Amongst the vending machines and year-old magazines in a place where we only say goodbye
It stung like a violent wind that our memories depend on a faulty camera in our minds
But I knew that you were a truth I would rather lose than to have never lain beside at all
And I looked around at all the eyes on the ground as the TV entertained itself

'Cause there's no comfort in the waiting room
Just nervous pacers bracing for bad news
And then the nurse comes round and everyone will lift their heads
But I'm thinking of what Sarah said that "Love is watching someone die"

So who's going to watch you die?.. "
