Wait, what, why? Tons of shit goes down mainlands, especially around SOBX. Down East is going to be up to their neck in water.

Because its likely this will be far enough off shore that only the outer banks will feel much of any effects from it.

As a homeowner, I want a hurricane because I want a new roof and it would be nice if it busted some windows since those need to be replaced as well.

I, for one, welcome Irene with open arms. We need the rain.

One of my students told me today he's bringing his family to the beach this weekend. I told him he might want to watch the news tonight instead

Probably because we've been in a drought for years. Think the last time we got out of it was when a hurricane hit us

Isn't there some historical precedence about whether or not this thing passes to the left or right of the bahamas as tell-tale of whether or not we'll see it?

I always thought the location of the eye as it hits Charleston was pretty much the deciding point on which way it was going to go. That's not a huge amount of warning though.

If you have your home covered already - then no worries - submit the claim. If you don't - you better get it quoted quick...binding authority for all agents is likely to be unavailable within the next 24 hours until no more threat of Irene.

If youer in a hurricane warning there is no chance of picking up new coverage

binding authority has not yet been taken away - so as of right now - you can still get coverage.

<--- works at your local insurance home office in the department that decides when it goes and how much of the state will have it taken away

my mom got a new homeowners insurance plan and they flat out told her if anything happened within 30 days of her signing up, it wouldn't be covered (or something like that)

and even if you do have insurance, it's still a huge PITA to have to have something repaired, or worse... you could be without a home in some extreme cases - that's why I don't understand the whole attitude of "meh, just make a claim"

^ that seems super shady, but maybe I just don't have enough experience yet to know if that is normal.

I have only owned a home for about 1.5 years and have never switched while covered, but it was a requirement by my mortgage company (before I could even buy the house) that the house insurance be setup and active from day 0. There was no dead period, it wasn't even on the table.

Also, if you are switching home owner's insurance on an existing mortgage, it should always work out that company 1 is covering up until the very last day and the new insurance takes over immediately after. I would never accept anything less. Just like health insurance you never want or accept any lapses in coverage.

The only thing I could think of is that maybe she didn't have it escrow'd (or owns it outright) and let the insurance lapse? At that point, like medical insurance, there are usually windows where the insurance company will not allow any claims to prevent exploitation.

^, ^^

Yea - look at the effective date of the policy on the declarations page. Regardless of what she was told, that is the legally binding document. If it says she has coverage today - she has it - period.

Also, how large of a PITA claims service depends on which company you are insured by. There is a difference in quality of claims service through out the industry.

Earthquake coverage may be added to your policy by endorsement. It is not a covered peril under a standard policy (HO-1,2, or 3).

In the majority of cases, this endorsement may only be added to your policy at your policy's renewal date.

idk what company, but I'm probably explaining it wrong

it might have been new flood insurance vs switching

I just know she had some sort of waiting period

Flood insurance is done through a special program, much like wind coverage at the beach. There is a 30 day wait period on it becoming effective. It's their universal fraud prevention strategy to prevent anyone from purchasing the policy with knowledge of an impending storm or other flood event.
