The only time I agree with this is on major holidays.

Seeing an old man eating by himself on Thanksgiving or Christmas is morose.

My wife and daughter went to bojangle's to eat yesterday while I was at a FF draft. There was a really old guy eating by himself a table over from them, and he struck up a conversation (he had a great grandaughter around the same age).

Apparently his wife of 55 year had passed away a month prior. When he left, he thanked my wife for talking to him because "it's nice to have someone to talk to for a change."

really felt bad for the guy.

^^That's always a sad situation. After my great-aunt died, my great-uncle continued some of their traditions (specifically, always having Sunday brunch and Friday night dinner at the yacht club where they were members) but always insisted on sitting by himself. He'd chat with folks they knew who stopped by but he did not want anyone to take Liz's place.

Different people handle grief in different ways, I suppose. Uncle George had been a sailor and a ship's captain for years before they were married, and for a while afterward as well, so he had been used to solitude and returned to it in the end.

In college I ate alone a lot of the time. Mostly because I was too lazy to find someone to eat with. I usually got free drinks though if I was at a restaurant.

i have no problems eating alone, though like most normal people I do it at the bar and not in the seating area. for some reason i am more comfortable with eating alone than I am with ever seeing a movie alone. I don't think I've ever been to the theatre solo. I'm sure I could if I really wanted to see something that bad but I've never had much trouble finding someone to tag along.

this goes against the entire action of eating-alone. why are you 1) worried what most normal people do and 2) comparing yourself to the status quo?

Wut? Why should you have an agenda to eat alone? You should eat alone because you are hungry and you can't find anyone to eat with you (or maybe you just feel like eating by yourself). You are putting too much thought into eating alone.

OP hires escorts on business trips?

Sounds like an opinion of a 22 year old still worried about appearing "cool."

I eat alone at nice restaurants and go to the movies by myself all the time. I've never been single this long so I've never realized how nice it is! No more going back and forth trying to figure out what restaurant or movie to go to, if I want Indian I can get Indian, if I want to see the sappiest rom com I can HA HA HA. Eating out, I usually take a book with me and it is so nice just to go and read without always having to make conversation and just be waited upon. I never notice anyone staring at me, maybe I'll take a look next time.

no, thats not what this is about. this is about eating along and not caring what other people think, being content with eating by yourself in public. every single person on this earth can eat alone when they are hungry, but can they eat alone and be happy eating alone? by worrying what "normal" people do and what others are thinking of him if he is eating anywhere but at the bar, he is still worrying what other people are thinking of him

i don't "worry" about it from a personal angle. It's more that it's unnecessary for me to take up a four top or a booth in this restaurant when I don't need it.

yes, i do agree that making use of the seating is probably the best for the restaurant. i like to make it awkward for the waiter by telling them its a party of 10, and then just eating by myself at the big table they sat me at. when they ask where everyone is at the end of the meal, i just tell them its my birthday party and no one showed up

i do not understand how if the restaurant has a bar, if you're by yourself you do not just eat at the bar like a normal person.

even a japenese steak house or something will cook the food on one of the tables then bring it to the bar.

and if you're really hard up for conversation with your foreveralone asses, chit chat with the other schlubs or flirt with the bar tender. at worst, watch the tv and pretend to be interested in the whatever the fuck game is on espn.

in some cases the bar menus have some banging deals.

i used to go to sullivans for the happy hour cheeseburgers that were the tits.

the sort of embarrassing thing for me is that I have a couple favorite places I like to go to, and it's almost always alone, and at this one place I've noticed I usually get the same waiter. I thought it was kinda funny when he told me what I wanted before I ordered it, I guess I'm a bit predictable but now it's a bit because he found and friended me on facebook. I guess I need to switch places up a lot more often

I did it one time in Dallas when I was really in the mood for some Hibachi but I was traveling for work so I didn't have anyone to roll with and jet lagged as fuck from redeye in from LAX so I just wanted some peace and some quiet and some hibachi motherfucking shrimp but this tribe of obnoxious breeder cunts from Fort Worth just had to sit next to me and strike up conversations about Mexicans and Troy Aikman and did I know that Texas was bigger than most of the northeseastern states combined? Of course I knew that you yokel fucks, I know how to read a map jesus christ. All I want is to eat my food and drink my saporro in silence like the malevolent misanthrope I am.

But yeah, I could see how under different circumstances, it could be a good time.

Oh man, on the topic of Hibachi places. I went to one with my gf last weekend and we were seated with two middle aged couples and a pair of loud older women (who actually turned out to be kinda fun). The two couples were so awkward. The husband and wife in each couple didn't speak a word to each other the WHOLE time. They seriously sat in silence the entire dinner. If I'm so unhappy when I'm 40 that I can't talk to my wife while at dinner I'd just want someone to shoot me in the face.

way to make assumptions.

what if they were deaf-mutes but have learned to communicate telepathically?

They might have been having a conversation of a lifetime, and you'd never know it!

Been to the movies by myself maybe three or four times. Last time was a few years back, it was raining and I was bored so one day I just snuck a fifth of vodka into the theater with me and saw Charlie and the Chocolate Factory/Devil's Rejects/Wedding Crashers back to back to back. Greatest seven hours of my life.

I frequently eat/shop/travel alone. I've only gone to a movie alone once and it kind of blew because I wanted to talk about it afterward. I only eat at the bar when the place is in need of tables or I want to talk to strangers, otherwise I feel like everyone is watching me eat. My plate usually feels too far away at the bar also. First world problem. When I travel I usually drink no matter where I sit, but the bar is more common.

Dude the other day was at the Mexican restaurant on cheap margarita night reading a book, moving his lips along with the words. It's so annoying when people do that.

This weird dude at IHOP the other day sat by himself at the booth behind mine and talked to himself. It was really creepy. Then he kept staring at me so I had to hide my head behind the person in front of me so he couldn't see me.

And then there are the people who go eat at a sit down resturant by themselves so they get the company of the waiter / waitress.

I eat at restaurants by myself all the time. Usually sit at the bar. If people want to feel sorry for me or judge me in some way, that's their deal. I'm secure in who I am. Howeber, if someone would like join me that would be nice as well.

Ladies of tww, feel free to PM.

When I go to concerts by myself, it's because none of my friends like the music.

When I go to the concert, I see a lot of people that like the music, but I wouldn't want any as friends.

It's a weird anomaly.
