Oh yeah...I've never actually climed Grandfather mountain...I guess that's about the only "popular" NC mountain that I haven't climbed.

My grandma was a north carolina history teacher and my granny lived in nags head, between the two of them and their love of travel I don't think there is an NC landmark I haven't seen.

Yes and no. It's bonkers at night, but there are a ton of details you can see in daylight that don't show up in the reflectors, and when Vollis is there you can go inside the property and inspect stuff close-up without worrying about getting hassled.

My parents took me on an OBX vacation when I was a teenager and we hit all the lighthouses. Looking back now I'm really glad we did that. It was awesome just taking ferries, driving along the ocean on small roads, and eating fresh seafood every night.

I've never been to Mt. Mitchell and it's been way too long since i've been to the caverns to even say i've been.

Mystery Hill
Acid Park
Cape Hatteras Lighthouse (I don't know how I haven't seen that)
Mt Mitchell

It has been a long time for me on a lot of the other stuff. I need to go back to Linville.

The only NC landmark I have never seen but would like to is Ellicott's Rock.

Others I have not seen but have no desire to are:
Hatteras Lighthouse
Tryon Palace
Mt. Mitchell
Acid Park

I don't know, it was mentioned earlier so I listed it. I don't know what the fuck it is

^Tryon Palace is a letdown, but the town around it is very pretty.

There really is not much to it. I mean, it is cool for what it is, but don't go expecting much.

Also, Brown Mountain. I've been there but I've never seen the lights. Seen pretty much everything else in this thread except Tryon Palace and Acid Park.

Rockingham and North Wilkesboro have both been closed for NASCAR races for some time now and I'm pretty sure N. Wilkesboro isn't used for anything. The last time I drove by there it still had the old Winston Cup signs up:

A good track to check out, if you're into racing, is Bowman Gray in Winston Salem.

Wow. Forgot about that place. I always saw the billboards as a kid and wanted to stop there, but we never did. I hear it sucks from people that have been.

Edit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJ6R2Wuq6Vc

So it's almost as cool as a McDonald's playground but they probably charge $8 a head.

The only good thing about Old Salem is the cookies. It's like the poor man's version of Colonial Williamsburg.

I have never been to Tryon Palace. I haven't been to the lighthouse near Wilmington either. Can't really think of anything else I've missed.

I'm just glad someone finally got it right, it's Devil's Tramping Grounds, as a Chatham county native I was highly offended. Although yes it is fairly lame and trashed now but if you get lucky you might get to party with drunk rednecks there at night and they can tell you about chatham's other famous spot Carolina Hill

No people have stayed there overnight. Tue legend goes if you sleep in the circle you will wake up outside of it in the morning but I don't know of anyone personally who has tested the theory. It's a tough one to test since it's technically on private property so you might get shot at haha.

It's always been known as the Devil's Stomping Ground as long as I've known about it. That's what my 1st grade teacher called it.

There's a small part of the original foundation that you can see in the basement. The rest of it is the rebuild. The only thing real in there are the antiques they've collected, it's more a museum than anything.

I haven't heard that term in 10 years. There's some strange shit that goes on there. We rode through there in HS and there were dead goats hanging in the trees.

If you are going to go to Biltmore, either go in the spring when everything is in bloom or at Christmas when they have up 5000 trees and all the balla decorations.

I had never been to the Outer Banks until a few years ago and it quickly became one of my favorite places in NC. Also never been to New Bern at all, been meaning to go sometime soon though.

Other places I haven't seen mentioned yet are Fort Fisher, USS North Carolina or Reed Gold Mine. I highly recommend Fort Fisher if you enjoy history and/or nature. It's beautiful and you can take the fun ferry ride to get there. There is a huge sea wall that you can walk on that takes you way out into the water, and you can climb to the top of the Buchanan Battery to get a great view of the surrounding area.

The World's Largest (functional) Frying Pan has a capacity for 365 chickens. It weighs 2 tons, is 15 feet in diameter and holds 200 gallons of cooking oil. It can be viewed every day in the "Town Square" in Rose Hill and has been used to cook chickens for various festivals and fund-raisers for over 4 decades. The pan was built in 1963 by Queensboro Steel Corp in Wilmington as a tribute to the area's burgeoning poultry industry. If you want to see the World's Largest Frying Pan - only Rose Hill can make such a cast-iron claim.
