Other four-legged creatures, that cannot properly cool their bodies (sweat) will get exhausted much faster than we will. We may be lagging behind their trail, but eventually we would find the exhausted animal resting. Then food time!

Scott Carrier (he's done stuff on This American Life) wrote a book about the possibility of early humans hunting deer and antelope and stuff simply by running them down (over the course of several hours). Most marathoners run at 10-12mph. Which is much faster than a jog, which is usually 6-8mph.
