how the fuck was this guy harmed? is the dude gonna die now because he can't sit his fat ass down at his local White Castle and get fatter? is he losing income because he can't sit down at White Castle and swallow some sliders? Did the chair collapse and crush his cat on account of it not being properly balanced for his weight distribution? Missing the whole point.
We are preserving integrity in the populous.
For instance, a police chief got punished for doing far LESS than a lie. A police chief got fired in Florida this week because he was being "insubordinate" to the mayor's requests. Did he do anything wrong? No. Did he lie? No. He was doing his job the right way, which happened to be the opposite of what the mayor wanted. As a result, he was fired.
Here is the quote from the verdict: "This has been a painful process for the City, but at the same time has demonstrated that our city demands that its employees respect their superiors and follow the Charter," he said."
They had to preserve the integrity of the system. Without integrity, the system simply does not work.
Now, WHITE CASTLE is a corporation held to a higher integrity standards than the customer in this case. If you allow white castle to lie, all the other corporation can use it as a precedent to lie to their customers. Customers need to be able to trust these business entities or else the system is going to break.
We're already lied to in virtually every commercial that's put on TV. Wouldn't it be nice if the commercials didn't lie?
"Hi. I'm Jen. I owed $1,000,000 to the IRS and all I had to pay was $1000!!!"
"Dairy Queen makes bubbles with kittens inside"
"Quality is the reason it tastes great at Taco Bell"
"Redbull gives you wings"
But that's television...they could just say it's entertainment.
Back to real life: The customer used respect and gave ample time and proper, proven notification to comply to his "request". The letter saying "yes, we will install a seat for you" should mean that this man will win his case guaranteed. 9/12/2011 11:57:00 PM

no, YOU are missing the point. That is NOT the government's job. at the point that government can "preserve integrity," it can make any law it sees fit to do so, and it will undeniably make bad ones. it will make laws that benefit itself and that will hurt the people, especially when they try to reform the government. by demanding that there actually be harm in order recoup damages, we prevent this.
Quote : | "For instance, a police chief got punished for doing far LESS than a lie. A police chief got fired in Florida this week because he was being "insubordinate" to the mayor's requests." |
again, you are confusing actions that involve the government with actions that don't. The police chief often serves at the pleasure of the mayor. that's how it works.

and if companies lie about little shit, then people will simply go elsewhere. if the companies lie in advertising, they can be held accountable. problem solved, with no need for "integrity legislation."
Quote : | "The customer used respect and gave ample time and proper, proven notification to comply to his "request". The letter saying "yes, we will install a seat for you" should mean that this man will win his case guaranteed." |
no one signed a contract. no one is bound by any contract. man isn't harmed at all. case closed. he should bitch and moan about to his friends until White Castle either fixes it or goes out of business. that's how capitalism works. the government isn't here to make people play nice and on the playground and make us all sing harmony harmony oh love. no wonder you ran a pizza store into the ground.
btw, you still haven't shown how this guy was harmed. gonna do that?

Don't think that all because you won a bitcoin argument against Arab13 that you are even close to winning this argument. You keep losing sight of the premise. You know damn well that we BOTH KNOW LYING IS LEGAL. I am arguing my stance on why IT SHOULD BE ILLEGAL.
The example I used was a real life example that is similar to HARSH justice from doing something less than lying. It also pinpoint why INTEGRITY is so important.
You're not going to find an example that's completely the same to prove my point... since this case is unique.
You're justifying that lying is OKAY because it's not illegal, which is a stupid argument. All because you CAN it doesn't mean you SHOULD.

Why is it laughable? It's not laughable at all.
A letter with your letterhead, typed out by your corporation's hands, with your signature is not laughable.
If you're laughing, then you have misplaced humor in a serious situation. It's condescending and it's toxic for the progress of humanity. 9/13/2011 12:35:22 AM

^^While I don't think "hating" any other citizen is good nor do I condone it, I can somewhat see what makes some other people appear that way in their reactions and I don't think you can really compare the two. At all.
On one hand you have people who are being denied citizen rights that other Americans have simply due to something out of their control. On the other hand you have someone here who can't fit into a booth at a fast food restaurant but still has every opportunity to buy and consume the food as he pleases otherwise. Boohoo they promised and didn't deliver. It's crappy fast food. If it bothers you that much, take your business elsewhere and post an angst-ridden rant on your facebook page or something, but don't waste time possibly tying up the legal system.

a second-class citizen is a second-class citizen.
so how can anyone try to champion the rights of one class while simultaneously openly scorning the very existence of another.
don't mind me. just making a point.
--
as far as the lawsuit - there's no consideration, it's not a contract, it's considered an illusory promise at best, and he's not entitled to any relief whatsoever.
but that's not what i'm commenting on at all. i'm more or less commenting my observations at peoples' reactions to the story in the first place.

The fact that some people don't like them is not enough to make them a second class citizen imo. They aren't denying him service. I do understand what you are saying about being two-faced though.
The main issue I have here is that regardless of fat or not, people suing over stuff that is not a legal issue is simply a major pet peeve of mine for some reason.

I hate when people take more effort, time, and money and put it into something that can be solved so easily such as this case. It doesn't hurt anyone to put 1 or 2 handicap seats in there for larger guests. To deny this man a seat is causing pointless upheaval for no real benefit for themselves other than a sense of pride for being naturally skinny.

^He's denying himself a seat by continuing to be a fat ass.
And it's not as simple as putting in a "handi-cap" seat. Shit, this guy would probably sue if they put in a handi-capped seat because he would say that he's not handi-capped and they are being discriminatory. But if they put in a couple seats at one place, they have to put them in all of the White Castles. That's expensive as shit.

why does the establishment have to pay for a chair though? They already built their restaurant to the legally established building codes which include ADA requirements. If they thought they were losing business over their booth size they would have already done it (assuming the unlikely case that they have no regular chairs already).
I understand not wanting to be discriminatory, but at the same time there is something to be said for establishments not having to bend over backwards for every little complaint and request if it isn't a legal issue.

If someone can't walk into the building with their own legs, then they get their own wheelchair... White Castle doesn't provide a moving sidewalk from the parking lot or rental wheelchairs
If someone can't fit into a any available seat (built to code requirements), then they should bring their own chair/wheelchair to sit at the end of the table.... White Castle shouldn't have to provide it 9/15/2011 4:55:44 PM
