Try putting your blinker on a little earlier to indicate to the impatient person behind you that you intend to move over after passing. Courtesy is a two-way street.

Also, chances are that if the car behind you has already passed the car to the right, and has already gotten over next to you, that you're already 3-4 car lengths past the passed vehicle and are taking your sweet ass time getting out of the left lane.

Of course it won't help if the asshole behind you is so impatient that they speed up before you can get over. Fuck those people.

I lock up the middle lane hypermilin'. Its my prerogative to do 55 in a 65 cresting a hill. There are the left (and right) lanes to pass me (usually). It's not worth driving in the right lane the whole way because people treat that like the fast lane too. Especially those who are overly excited to be exiting the highway. I honestly never have much problem with people riding my ass, and often times there are many other drivers plenty content to follow along at a respectable distance. I find it worth the extra 10mpg for my daily 50 mile total commute to take an extra 5-10 minutes getting where i'm going.

Then there are times where I have a load on my mind and drone along at 5 over...

I fully endorse this group, but this shit pisses me off. I will be going 10-15 over, passing people in the right lane, when some jackass in his honda ricer or
oversized pick-up will get on my ass because they are going 30 over. I am not slowing down, in order to slide over, to save you 20 seconds on your trip.
I am more than considerate enough to get over when i'm past all teh slow moving cars in the right lane.

Quote :
"Nobody should be driving in the left lane unless they're passing someone. Absolute speed has nothing to do with what lane you should be in--only whether or not you're engaged in passing someone"

There is one exception. During rush hour in major cities, the highways do reach satuaration where traffic must fill the left lane as bulk flow falls below the speed limit.

^think god someone gets it I set my cruise as soon as I get off an exit ramp. If you're that important leave earlier

So what I gather is people that drive slower are lazy and cause wrecks. Id love to see the statistics to back that up
I'm pretty sure the non driving fucks that play frogger ant tetris with their car doing 15-20mph over in the morning and evening in rush hour are the ones causing it

Yes rush hour sucks but there's no reason to drive like a nigger.

^^ Just because someone wants to drive faster than you doesn't give you the right be an asshole and block them. Again, what the hell is wrong with letting someone by? Next time I see you in the grocery store Will, I'll just walk slowly in front of you so you can't get around me. I mean, if you are in a hurry and I'm not, then that's your problem. Perhaps you should have left to go to the store sooner...

For fucks sake, stop acting holier than thou Will. AND LEARN SOME GOD DAMN ENGLISH GRAMMAR AND SPELLING YOU RACIST BASKET OF TURTLE SHIT.

Like a personal place for him to get pulled over for speeding.

Not on my Honda. It's pretty much always 0-1MPH off the GPS. I think I may have seen a 2 MPH discrepancy, but not often and not for long.

I don't really bother tailgating slow people on the interstate. Both of my cars are pretty tiny and given that so many people drive SUVs or pickups that they probably just laugh at me At most I might get really close for a second or two to announce my desire to go faster, then back off to a reasonable distance (i.e. far enough back to be safe while not big enough to invite someone to cut in front of me).

No, motherfucker, I don't want to be in the passing lane either, except when I'm passing. I want traffic to flow as it's supposed to, where I'll be in the traveling lane like everyone else, except for while I'm passing someone.

good luck coming from 85 to Durham. I stay in the left lane because fucks dont know how to keep a constant speed.

there is nothing worse than fuckers changing their speeds all the fucking time.

its fucking stupid to fly up on someones ass to just jam on the fucking brakes 100 feet up.
also in rush hour stop and go traffic is a fucking hassle with aftermarket pads/rotors and just in general. so i stay in the left lane and keep a slow speed(until traffic speeds up) and it doesnt usually piss people off.

^ Does not state where a vehicle at the speed limit shall be driven.

Drive 55 in a 55, then left lane is okay, unless there's some other paragraph.

^^ Point was, according to the law, you can drive in the leftmost lane if you are driving the speed limit. It is permissible.

Makes you a tool in the eyes anyone who wants to break the law and exceed the speed limit in that lane, but technically it is within the law.

No I do not. I agree with most that you should avoid the left lane if possible. My sole point is that as written, the law DOES allow it.

...but I hold no animosity toward a car in the left lane if they're going at least the speed limit, unlike most.

Irrelevance to what? Discussion on the fact that generally accepted behavior is to not occupy the left lane? Yes, it is irrelevant to that societal conclusion.

Although Restricted did post some actual legal background behind this issue and we can see that the societal conclusion is unfounded according to the law. Arguably, that's relevant to this thread. If it is, then so was my response. If not, then mine was not. Your call. Don't care.

"Appropriate signs" as used herein shall be construed as including "Slower Traffic Keep Right" or designations of similar import."

While it states at a speed less than the posted speed limit, if you are doing 61/60 mph zone and there are cars piling up behind you; you are impeding the flow of traffic.

^ Yes you are, but you are still allowed to do it, according to the words you just posted.

......I assume you understand that?

edit: to be clear, it states that you may operate in that inside lane, so long as you are travelling the maximum speed.

---

Look folks, I'm just tryn'a clear up some misunderstanding earlier in the thread.

If you are travelling the speed limit, then it is legal to travel in the inner lane. As far as the law is concerned, you are not impeding traffic flow and it is not punishable nor incorrect. Those people in the video toward the end of the first page were doing nothing illegal.

However, it is also the discourteous thing to do, because the vast majority of people do break the law and exceed the speed limit, and that's just the way it is. So you should keep to the right lane.

^ NEW INFO

Apparently the "Uniform Vehicle Code" is nationwide and it trumps any state laws:

Quote :
""The Uniform Vehicle Code states:

Upon all roadways any vehicle proceeding at less than the normal speed of traffic at the time and place and under the conditions then existing shall be driven in the right-hand lane then available for traffic ...

Note that this law refers to the "normal" speed of traffic, not the "legal" speed of traffic. The 60 MPH driver in a 55 MPH zone where everybody else is going 65 MPH must move right." "

Therefore, if the above were true (and I saw it in several search results), then you are NOT justified to drive the limit in the left lane. In fact you do have to move over. Unsure if the UVC is a law, or enforceable...

speed limits are set based on the design speed of the road. if the design speed is 60mph then the road is posted at 55mph or lower.
