Also, if you youtube "Reno plane", something like 30% of the videos are of different crashes from different years at this event. 30%, no lie.

and spamtubefags are already creating stupid pointless still-picture videos set to annoying music with reno crash titles.
I weep for the ignorance in this country.

Homeboy is a bit fucking old to be flying planes in races. He should be flying a hover-round or relaxing in his craftmatic adjustable bed or walking along the beach with a metal detector, not out there pretending to be Chuck Yeager.
It's bad enough old people drive their crown victorias through farmers markets, but do they have to fly into groups of people, too? Fuck, dude, you're 80.

First of all, I'm pretty sure that this was mechanical or possibly structural failure that caused this, not the pilot (although I suppose it's possible that it was GLOC).
...and I bet that most of the pilots of those airplanes are pretty old. It takes a while to get the skill, money, connections, and experience to land a seat flying an unlimited-class Reno racer. 9/16/2011 11:09:00 PM

well, hopefully the people in the crowd "loved" watching planes crash, cuz that's how they died.

I don't know shit about flying planes, but I imagine it is more taxing on the body than driving very slow in traffic, and 80 year olds don't seem to be able to handle that very well either. Alls i'm sayings is, I wouldn't expect an 80 year old to be racing in an F1 or Nascar event, so it seems a bit peculiar that we would let an 80 year old race a plane, where he could potentially land ANYWHERE.
I think a general rule of thumb should be that you aren't allowed to do anything if that act is likely going to make you shit your pants. That would effectively work around any age discrimination and be pretty non-biased across the board.

Let's not forget that lifespans are increasing and 80 year olds are a lot more capable than they used to be.
Let's not forget that you'll be 80 one day, so you're digging your own grave by limiting what old people can and can't do.

there is no fucking way it was engine failure. the flaps wouldn't be down at that speed. the only way it would be flaps would be if one broke and jammed an aileron or something.
my guess is that some sort of flight control jammed or broke or something, but that's just a wild ass guess based on the ltitle bit that i could see in that video. 9/16/2011 11:24:59 PM

^^^^^ they are. why the hell would they want an autopilot in an airplane like that?
as far as ejection seats, i mean, i have probably 800-900 hours of riding in them, but i don't know that much about the challenges of installing them in an airplane that was never designed to accommodate them...i've never heard of that being done. it might simply be a case of trying to minimize weight, with them being race planes...i don't know. there's also a lot of legal shit that goes along with ejection seats...you don't see them in civil airplanes very often. in many cases, when civil pilots buy, for example, old communist-bloc jets, they actually have the seats de-armed. i think a lot of that is to save on the cost of annuals, which would be a non-issue to an unlimited-class race team.

maybe the planes need self-destruct funtions, so they obliterate into millions of pieces that flutter down harmlessly. 9/17/2011 12:04:32 AM

^Fuck that and fuck you you pussy little troll.
I go to a shit ton of air shows, and accept the risk. I was at the Winston-Salem Air Show last weekend, and weather permitting, I will be at the Virginia Beach Air Show next weekend. Yes this stuff sucks, but there are TONS of air shows a year, just like their are tons of tractor pulls, drag races, NASCAR/F1/Indy races, etc. Spectators have died at all of them, and they keep on going.
This year has actually been a shitty year for airshows. If ya'll followed more than the headlines they have had several deaths involving performers, but this was the first that involved spectators. One of the Red Arrows went down in a field killing the pilot, Tod Green lost his balance while doing a stunt going from a Stearman to Otto the Helicopter and plummeted 300 feet to his death, and Bryan Jensen lost control while in an flat spin in his Pitts and crashed in Kansas City, dying as well. So that one weekend had 3 performers die. That said, there are hundreds of these shows a year, I've probably been to a dozen or more at this point and never seen anything that remotely scared me. Usually its more disappointment because they have a light come on and abort their show. That happened early this season with an F-22 demo, and again last weekend at Winston with one of the F-104s. I was disappointed, but glad they were being cautious and not risking their lives and the lives of all spectators, neighbors, etc. by pressing on anyways.
Oh and post if you find anymore photos of the plane itself. This was all I could find, but apparently some other photographers I know said they saw pictures with the whole trim tab completely gone, or maybe even the whole left elevator. The design of Ghost always made me nervous because Jimmy cut off part of the wings, making them extremely short. It makes it faster, but also makes it harder to control. Here is the one photo I have found so far:
