I didn't really pay attention to a lot of posts in this thread, but I will note that the things being awed over have been in regular use for over sixty years.

Les Paul and Mary Ford were layering parts in their home studio starting in the '50s (on equipment that Les invented and built himself), resulting in a simple guitar/vocal duo making records with dozens of guitar and vocal parts.

The bit where the guy sequenced video of drum hits looks pretty cool, but it's no different than what anyone with a sampler and a sequencer has been doing since the '80s, and one could even argue it's relatively similar to tape loop recordings and Mellotron loops done by people like Steve Reich and the Beatles in the '60s.

I don't expect anyone who doesn't deal with musical technology on a daily basis to know these things off hand, but please understand that the girl in the OP only needs to know four guitar chords and how to count to eight in order to make that video.

^^^ I've been in plenty of bands, but none of them have been launched with the intent of having a music career or showing off my skills (if slowly reconstructing a song note-for-note without a creative bent is a skill). Therefore, I've never posted videos of myself on Youtube like a million other mildly talented folks, including this girl.

This girl is no more talented than any person you'll see playing for tips at coffee shop on a Saturday night. That's not to say that she's untalented, but that she's good at using her pedals and can sing on pitch while being cute.

I guess in an age where Rock Band makes people think they know something about music and your friends are on Facebook instead of standing with you in a garage, record-imitating covers made solo with a quantizing computer are not only satisfactory, but impressive.

I'm just a schlub with a guitar and a recording deck. I know that. What you need to know is Josie Charlwood is the same thing.

I really don't care about this girl specifically. I know people like her because she's cute and she makes things which sound like the records they're covering; that's what people like. I've learned from DJing that people don't want to hear good songs; they want to hear songs they know. The part that's frustrating is that people fawn (relatively) over a video like this and groups like Dirty Projectors, those with truly breathtaking talent, still labor just under the surface of mainstream success.

Whatever a "looper" is. It's not really a "thing" to use a DL-4 or a RC-2(0) (as in Red's case). Some use it more heavily than others. Like vinylbandit said, the general technique of dubbing is older than your mom. And it seems like less and less bands refrain from sampling. Not much to be impressed about.

Its not the lack of talent or old technology that bugs me, its just that you're basically watching someone recompose something in real time. Its not the music, id be fine if it wwas just a song, most songs you people listen to are basically the same thing except that there are 4 or 5 sections that are looped. I don't get it... what's next watching someone copy paste sections in protools?

And imo synapse if you're doing it for sucsess you're doing it wrong.... I know I play shitty metal music that most people who listen to metal probably wouldn't even like, but its not that hard to be creative without repeating shit that's already done and still acquire a descent fan base. Other than maybe micheal jackson I can't think of any musician who everyone likes anyways.
