lulz, I can see that being a great pep talk. "Guys, I know we just got destroyed by Fairfield and only scored ~20 points each half, but cheer up because they are probably better than Boston College."
It'll be interesting to see how they play against Wake tonight. I was impressed by how the Deacs performed against Dayton. They are looking a lot better than last year despite having a scarce number of scholarship players. 11/25/2011 3:01:09 PM |

Yeah I always liked wake, grew up in HP and got to see them some growing up.
I actually hope they crash and burn just so they can go ahead and stop the bdzelik era, what an awful hire. They deserve better.
Say what you will about Gaudio but he was better than this.

http://arizona.sbnation.com/arizona-st-sun-devils/2011/12/8/2621240/ASU-basketball-herb-sendek-contract-extension
Quote : | "ASU men's basketball program will be keeping head coach Herb Sendek on as the Arizona Board of Regents has approved a new two-year contract extension to keep Sendek in Tempe for the foreseeable future.
Sendek's salary will stay put at at $1.2 million per season, consisting of a base salary of $295,000 with additional payments to the tune of $905,000. It could be bumped up at the beginning of July each summer, wth the increase amount decided by Lisa Love, ASU's current Vice President of Athletics, and subject to the approval from ASU President Michael Crow as well as the board. But then again, he could get no increase.
He will also get a sizable retention bonus for sticking with the program, a nice side payday of $600,000 if he is stays on as head coach through June 30, 2014. His full contract now runs through June 30, 2016." |

You ever hear the phrase "Don't tell me about the labor - just show me the baby"???
The baby in this case is NCAA tournament births, and victories. That is the standard on how we should judge the program and head coach. I don't care about the labor. Just show me the baby. But 3 20 win seasons!!!
For those counting at home - Herb has 1 NCAA tournament win in his ASU career. With 2 NBA players on his team, when he did that - mind you. " |

Why doesn't he just say at the post game press conference..."we played hard tonight, and had too many turnovers. But, what really was the difference maker was that the fans didn't yell loud enough. If they would just do their part, we'd make more shots, have a higher free throw percentage and I and my staff could recruit better players into my amazing systems once the players see how great the home court advantage is here at ASU. That's the real crux of the problem here at ASU, it's the fans"." |

however, I'll bash them for him. ASU is the largest school in the United States, with a total enrollment of 75,000+

It’s really simple, you have to play with great energy and effort all the time unless you’re talent quotient is so overwhelming that you can take pockets off." |

^Wow. While reading that article I had to remind myself more than a few times that it wasn't about NCSU athletics.
* A botched coaching search (albeit football) * The "We can't do better" attitude, so we might as well accept our fate * Better schools you can't compete with just down the road * People in the media looking past any valid criticism in their rush to support Herb
Quote : | "Once, Mike Krzyzewski was asked if Sendek was as good as advertised, seeing that fans at North Carolina State had also begun to grumble about his presence.
"Are you serious?" Krzyzewski asked, incredulously.
Krzyzewski thinks Sendek is top-shelf material. So do most people inside the basketball community." |
Yeah, that's never a valid argument to make. I'd like to think that coaches are professional, so they aren't going to say something negative about another team's coach.
Herb had a really bad year last year and this year is off to a terrible start. Fans are just questioning the timing of this extension, especially considering he already had several years left on his current contract. The fans have the right to be upset, they appear to be headed in the wrong direction now and if the AD thinks that Herb is their man why extend? He already has more than enough years on his contract to prove he could course correct.
My personal favorite part of the article:
Quote : | "even if that basketball team can't beat Fairfield in 2011.
Sendek is an excellent coach." |
At least put another sentence or two between those two statements. Help ease the transition.

Never seen a mediocre coach get so much love from the media.
Even if you like Herb as a coach, this extension makes zero sense right now.
