haha, yeah sometimes I get my kicks enough just by the knowledge that I could go out and stroke a check for all manner of ridiculous things that I don't actually feel compelled enough to follow through and do it.

As far as cars, I like the full spectrum. I appreciate a lot of them. It's nearly a compulsion that is almost a problem for me, haha...I can never seem to settle on a car and happily keep it. Fortunately, I'm a good enough buyer that I just about always make money on them, so instead I'll just call it a hobby, haha.

Let me see if I can list some cars that I've legitimately looked at and thought about buying...let's say, within the last few months:

Prius, Golf/Jetta TDI, Corvette C6 Z06, 911 Turbo, early/mid 90s Civic hatch, 1st and 2nd generation Miatas, Aston-Martin V8 Vantage, Nissan Versa, 335i, X5, CJ-7, FJ-40 Land Cruiser, Mercedes ML55, E55 AMG, Super Seven kit cars, old full-size pickups, E46 and E92 M3, Volvo 240 (preferably wagon), Jeep Wrangler TJ, Touareg TDI, Viper...

there are more, but those are the first ones that come to mind. If I had the money, I'd buy one of everything on that list (well, prob wouldn't buy a Versa if I had a Prius and Golf TDI...and I'd prob get the Touareg TDI and leave out the X5 and ML55...but yeah, I'd totally have at least one old Volvo 240 and a 20-year old Miata.

Pretty much if it's a cool car that I think represents a good value (or if it's just mega cool like an Aston-Martin or Viper), I want it...so, with regard to this thread, I don't know where I'd fall, because I really could be driving around in a Maserati this month, then sell it and buy a '94 Honda Civic, haha.

Correlation is far from perfect. As I understand it, Warren Buffet (who has more money than you or I will ever see) drives a POS.

I've driven a range of cars and been driven around in a wider range still. Regardless, I can't understand the point of driving a car on the basis that it can go faster/accelerate faster/take turns faster than is legal or safe to do. I pick my cars because they get the job done in the most efficient way possible, which combines initial cheapness with lack of tickets and spending money on shit I don't fucking need or want.

I think there are people in here who are misinterpreting the opposition. We're not saying you're ugly because you drive a nice car. We're saying you're not necessarily attractive because you drive one.

And let me add another option to the OP: You pass a lot of cars on the road. Your eyes are only drawn to the very nice (or extremely shitty) cars. You might be passing a LOT of attractive people without noticing them, because they aren't driving distinctive vehicles.

yes, surely there is confirmation bias...but just as surely, there is a significant correlation between wealth and attractiveness.

and last I heard, Warren Buffett drives a Lincoln Town Car with a license plate that says "THRIFTY".

I've literally never seen an attractive woman that drove a Mustang. They are ALWAYS whale-beasts.

EDIT: Then again I don't really think of a Mustang as a "nice car" anymore.

I actually don't know of a correlation between wealth and attractiveness. Attractiveness/income...sure, it exists to a point...but even then, I don't know that the difference in income accounts for a difference in vehicles. And, if you spend your extra income on a nice vehicle, then you don't end up any wealthier than the other guy.

Also, I'm not saying that some people are just inherently concerned with appearances like it's some kind of bad thing. A lot of times, appearances are part of the job--you have to dress nice, look nice, and drive a nice car for clients and crap.

A bloated, greasy-haired guy in sweat pants and an '82 Tercel isn't exactly gonna be closing any business deals. But if he goes to the gym, takes a shower, gets some new duds, and buys a nice car...all of the sudden, he's "attractive," and we're all acting stupid like it's some kind of mystery.

I heard he upgraded to a Cadillac DTS a few years ago. But in comparison to what he could afford, and taken with the fact that he drives himself everywhere rather than keeping a driver on staff, Thrifty definitely applies. Same with Sam Walton when he was still alive--drove an old pickup truck.

Women who are very concerned with their appearances do spend a bit more money. Looking really good is expensive, apparently. One of my gfs spends the following on just her beauty routine:

$300 hair cut/color/tip every 6 weeks (often enough to cover the gray) = $2400/year
$350 keratin treatment 3 times a year = $1050/year
$1000 Botox and Juvaderm every 6 months = $2000/year
$60 Glycolic acid facials monthly = $720/year

That's over $6k annually, without including clothing and smaller cosmetic treatments. She also gets a cosmetic procedure done about once a year (nose, breasts, lipo, cheeks) ... at the price range of approximately 4k to 10k per year.

And she drives a 2010 Escalade and is trading up at the end of the year.

Lookin' good ain't cheap. Luckily, she has a great job that pays well. And so does her husband.
