I don't think most people would be honest about a huge credit card debit

Nothing outside of a car loan that will be paid off early next year or so.

huge credit card debt? Yep,that's me.

Living outside my means for years has caught up to me hard recently. Sucks a lot.

Seriously. Like I got a 4.7% interest rate on my 14k used car loan.

But seriously, all but like 8k of my student loans and around 12k of my car loan will be paid off by may. Those both will get completely paid off by the time I graduate prototype/ELT school

None by OP's standards....

But I've got a little less than $230k in a house and $60k in school loans.

All are paid comfortably every month, plus a little extra.

at the moment, none.

Looking to buy myself a house in the next year or so though, so I'll report back then (probably in the $100k debt range then)

last month I finished paying off ~$10,000 in credit card debt. yeah it was dumb to rack up that much, but I'm proud that I paid it off - it took about 2.5 years

now I just have student loans

Student loans... somewhere around $160K (fucking law school)

-Credit Card: $9000 (2.5 months unemployed in 2011), and frivolous things
-$145k Student Loans (undergrad and grad).
-$89 to Wake County Libraries for overdue charges and lost books from 2009

Plan of Action:
-I work full-time at Duke, 2 part time jobs at Southpoint, should clear Credit Cards by May
-Student Loans, still in forbearance b/c I made pitiful $$ last year, but once no credit cards, I can swing $1700/month payment
-Paying off Library next week, and I've felt the most guilt about this one
-If I don't need it, I don't buy it, if I can't steal it, I don't need it.

wow, you're gonna pay at least $1500/month with that kind of debt. I just can't imagine that much money out of my paycheck every month.

Actually, it depends on his payment structure and his choice of work.

If he elects to take the income-based payment plan, he'll only pay a maximum of 10% of his income, the rest of which will be forgiven after 20 years (which, if you're making 100k, is only 10k per year, so it's not like he'll be starving).

Alternatively, if he works in the public sector or in non-profit work, he can opt both for income-based repayment as well as public forgiveness, which means after 10 years his loans will be forgiven.

This is assuming his loans are all federally-backed. Yes, the debt is monstrous, but it's not a death penalty.

Yes to $145K, all federal loans, plan to get a job in public sector soon, with the public service 10 years, 120 consecutive payments (income based or whatever payment plan agreement you have) forgiveness plan. Grad school took longer than anticipated (shit happens), I travelled abroad for research a few times, but I don't regret it. Undergrad, my family was pretty poor, so only have $18K for NCSU. But I'm inheriting a house, so don't plan to buy a new one, and I'm okay with what I owe. And if I don't get a public service job, I pay what I can, when I can.

~$140k left on the mortgage
$0k otherwise.

I wish I could pay off the mortgage without taking out another loan.

^^ yeah we are right at $250k

ive been paying on mine for a few years and will have it paid fairly soon. my wifes payments will start in a couple months but we've consolidated the loans and will begin an income based repayment with the balance dropped after 10 years.

other than that though, our cars are paid off and are credit cards are almost there (which we used when we moved here and payed rent in two cities for 3 months)

I have a mortgage and I agree with Noen. It's a bill that has to be paid no matter what. Want to take the summer off and road trip up across the US and up and down each coast? Better have enough cash to float the mortgage, taxes, insurance, & repairs on top of whatever your trip costs. Plus, you aren't crashing with your parents/friends for a couple months to get back on your feet when you come home. It's a pretty serious debt looming over you.

...wait, what does the government do to reduce the cost of college?

[NO] congrats.

Mortgages can be had at, what, 3.5-3.7% right now? That's around the average historic rate of inflation, let alone the likely rate of inflation after QE1, QE2, QE3, and QEinfinite. That makes mortgages essentially free money...but then that doesn't even count the fact that mortgage interest is tax deductible, and the opportunity cost of paying down a 3.x% mortgage instead of doing something more productive with the money.

_____________________

I have 0$ debt except for mortgages...that's been the case since 2008. I owe probably $360,000 in mortgage debt. Almost half of that is against a property that I lived in for a couple of years and is now income-producing for me. The other half is my current house.

college debt and costs will continue to go up as long as the government keeps handing out loans like they are candy.
