Will Power's car camera. Poor quality, but it's still pretty wild.

It's Danica. And she's going to Nascar full time next season. She was thinking about running the Indy 500 next year, but I wouldn't count on it.

So this thread is further proof that smc is the biggest piece of shit that posts on this forum. Go fuck yourself.

Nobody is forcing these men (and the occasional woman) to do this. They're doing it because they love it. In my opinion they are some of the luckiest people on earth, to race for a living. If I had the talent and was given the opportunity I would race in a professional series in a heartbeat.

His time came too soon, but he died doing what he loved. We should all be so lucky.

I thought smc was for less Government intervention but he wants to outlaw professional sports, what a hypocrite.

I saw this thread, and even the video, but the video they showed on the news had me all

It was the video from his car showing him launching into the air and into the fence...so crazy

Pretty sure smc wants to ban everything that can even be the slightest bit dangerous. Air travel, cars, sports, most power generation, and lots more.

^^ ripped the roll bar off. That was incredibly rare. I've seen them scrape on the ground for 100 yards, flip into dirt, and even flip into the fence before, but the roll bar always stayed intact. His head was in the catch fence and wall. Imagine having a few thousand pounds thrusted onto your head at a few hundred miles per hour. He had no chance once the roll bar sheared away.

^not to belittle his crash, but "a few hundred miles an hour"? No, by that point probably 150-170 mph is more realistic.

That article ^^ seems like its written by a very naive individual. People always bitch and moan after events like this. They're tragic, but they're rare. Get over it. Go complain about all the injuries in the NFL or something.

I was in Vegas this weekend but didn't hear about this til I got back. I did get a sweet video of 32 indy cars on the strip doing burnouts and stuff on Thursday night. I'm curious if he was one of them (pretty sure all the drivers were there but i have no idea).

Wheldon was the driver of the 77 car right? If so, he was at the 1:36 mark

Seems like they should add some type of procedural regulations to make sure the roll bars are welded-on better.

Fox News is slow on the story. This was announced at least a month ago.

Yup. He was standing 10 feet away from him 3 days before he died.

Yeah, I wish they would weld that carbon fiber roll hoop to the carbon fiber monocoque better.

Racing boats are using surplus F-16 cockpits now. Indycar gets a hoop.

Welds, by design, are usually stronger then the members they are connecting.

That's assuming it's a quality weld. In the field hanging from the side of a high rise, that's easier said than done. I'm guessing a car was built in a quality controlled environment, however.

Welding does make steel more brittle, so the pipe itself is likely what failed, not the weld

The pipe itself likely couldn't absorb that kind of force...not much of anything could, really

Yeah... It's not welded to the frame. It's bolted to the carbon fiber monocoque.

This. These asshole drivers bitch and moan about tracks being dangerous, but then they go out and race on it anyway. If you don't want to die, don't race! If you think racing is worth the risk of dying, then fine do it but don't expect any sympathy when the car you're driving 200 mph goes into a wall at 200 mph.
