What are you talking about? We're talking about curves, not points. Slopes don't coexist with a point (which is what you are stating), they exist AT a point on a CURVE. The line that describes the slope is called a tangent line, but that is yet another mathematical entity so...

...nevermind, just go back to your pizzas. 'Like casting pearls to the swine.'

If you get a diploma after saying what you just said, now I KNOW universities have no interest in education. They are all about the money.

^Yeah, how about you explain to us how all curves "have arc".

Just curious, what did YOU do with your "diploma"? Or degree for that matter...

Oh jesus christ. My head is hurting from the stupid. It really hurts pretty badly. The one thing you did right was post in this thread titled "Things people should be ashamed of NOT knowing"

Here: I let me google that for you:

Arc Central Angle
1
Draw the arc you want to measure along the circle's perimeter onto the paper with the pencil.
2
Start at the tips of both arcs and draw lines to the center of the circle with the ruler to make two radii and form the arc's angle.
3
Line the protractor's edge up with either of the radii, and measure the arc's central angle in degrees. Write the result down with pencil and paper for future reference.

Arc Length
1
Convert the arc's central angle into radians by multiplying it by p/180 with a calculator. For example, if the central angle is 60 degrees:

60 degrees x p/180= 60p/180=p/3
2

Multiply the radius of the arc by its central angle in radians, with "R" representing the radius and "C" representing the central angle, with the calculator. For example, if the radius is 5, and rounding to the nearest hundredth, the result is:

Arc length = RC = 5 x (p/3) = 5.23
3

Write the final result down onto the paper with the pencil for future reference.

...and the one thing you continue to do fail at is actually showing me how a curve "has arc". You point out what you think is "an act of stupidity" in other poster's messages, but can't stand to admit when you messed up.

What are the units for a curve's arc? Would that be degrees-feet/dx? So y=x^2.... what is the "arc" to that curve? See, instead you're going to do this stereotypical thing where you continue to post these little quips like, "Wow, what a dumbass!" and "you're so stupid!" when in reality, it would be as simple as saying "oops... you're right, that was a typo".

EDIT: You do realize that a curve /= an arc, right? You can't say a curve = arc any more than you can say a curve = tangent line. The fact that you are having to Google something and give me the 'distance of an arc' as the units for a curve that 'has arc' is just embarrassing. If you can't see that you claiming a curve is made up of a series of arc segments is the exact same thing as me saying an arc has an infinite number of slopes around it's contours, then I can't help you. It's the same f*cking thing.

And if you're just getting mad that I called out what you're doing with your degree, just remember that what's good for the goose is good for the gander. Don't make comments about how stupid people are and how surprised you are that they got their 'diploma' (ahem... degree is what we call it) if you don't want to be picked on for coming out of NC State and running a f*cking pizza shop in the dirtiest town in Virginia, second only to Petersburg.

Keep spinning, pizza man. I'll let you get the last word in if it makes you feel better.

You're completely right, it's a stupid argument. As far as censoring fuck, it's a gut reaction. I apologizing for using harsh letters and characters.

So anyway. Forgetting the whole shame thing. I think everyone should know basic first aid.

Spending any amount of time around a frat party should show some pretty shamefully ignorant displays of first aid.

"What?! He's throwing up all over my room? Well, just lay him down on his back so the vomit will land on his chest."*

*Actually heard this logic at a party several years ago.

Seems like spending time around any group of drunken idiots would suffice but OK. This just proves my point.

Staunching blood flow. Applying bandages. Wrapping sprained joints. People should know this shit to help themselves and other folks out.

^Very, very true. Nothing against frat guys at all (obviously I was there).

Along the lines of being prepared, I think guys should be ashamed of not being capable of changing a tire on a car. It's not rocket science.

Here's how to measure "arc" (which itself is usually a local thing): https://secure.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/wiki/Curvature#Curvature_of_plane_curves

I know you can measure and arc. I also know that you can approximate a curve by using a series of arcs. But not all curves are arcs (see non-rectifiable curves). If every curve was just some form of an arc, data analysis on experimental data would be a lot easier.

EDIT: And to be fair, I think that's all you're talking about, lewisje, is the approximation of a curve using arcs, AKA 'a local thing'.

Hey, I think I deserve a little credit for admitting it's not just a frat thing... Like I said, I was obviously AT the party so I can't really complain.

Getting back to the original inspiration of the thread...

The person may have done it on purpose it hopes that you would charge a 42 dollar tip so they could refute the charges altogether. Or it could have just been that they're a dumbass, or perhaps they were under stress, or any number of things. How cool would in be to be able to read minds and know what a persons motivation for anything is/was/will be.

^Have you ever analyzed yourself when you make a mistake? Ever ask yourself how you came up with a wrong answer to a question you already know?

Imagine filling out the tip spot and putting the total + tip in the tip spot. It's in ink, so you can't erase it.

Logic says cross it out, but your brain says "nah, if I cross it out, he'll know I messed up"

So he's thinking "How can I pull this off without looking stupid in a way that it looks like I did it on purpose?"

So he adds a simple " - " to the Total Spot. It's in illogical action... or is it?

It's not.

He did it so a third party couldn't add up the total and write it in the blank uncontested.

Also, by putting a glaring error, this signals, "throws an exception", and "red flags" to me that I need to fix his mistake.

He knows there's enough information for me to figure it out.

If things don't end up the way he wants, he knows where to come back to straighten everything out. Chances of that are slim to none because the mistake was so elementary that anyone could figure it out.

Moral of the story: people make stupid mistakes everyday that range from incredibly stupid to ingenious. Mistakes are human and no body is immune. We have to live with it.
