If you're saying you got beat harder than that, then I'm really sorry, but you grew up in an abusive household. That type of beating is straight up abuse, and getting beat worse than that is no doubt abuse. If you honestly got beat worse than that growing up and you honestly don't think that was abuse then you should probably start seeing someone before you have children yourself. You were conditioned as a child to see violence as acceptable and therefore it can lead you to treat your children just the same.

My mother beat the fool out of me with whatever she had on hand (a belt, her pocket book, the metal end of the fly swatter, she thwapped me with a guitar) and that video made my stomach turn over because of the video as a whole, not just the use of the belt.

That ought to be illegal, but it's probably not. Poor girl.

Politicians lose their jobs all the time for putting their wanker in the wrong place, but since sex is so much spookier than violence to most Americans I don't expect this guy to get anything but praise for beating his daughter routinely. And we know it was routine since she set him up to catch it on tape.

^I'm a parent and can't even conceive of doing this to my daughter. Shit, I can't even imagine doing this to my son, and he pushes my buttons all the time and that would be a pretty fair fight at least based upon size and strength.
If I ever find out someone else is beating her, I will hunt him down and shoot him (probably just in the nads; nothing deadly.)

I'm not really big on spanking as the "go-to" punishment, especially for a 16 year old girl, but I think that using a belt can be fine, and even striking that hard can be fine.

It's not for those reasons that I call his behavior clearly abusive. It's more the overall manner in which he did it. If it had been calm, measured, and in more of "I love you and don't like doing this, but it will go poorly for you until you behave" manner, I would say it was either OK, or more likely, just bad parenting.

This, however, was out of control, vitriolic, and...abusive.
