Anyone got an answer on this?

This is exactly why I switched to Sprint" |
Sprint's data, at least around Raleigh, is complete garbage. I can have 4-5 bars of 3G and data will be completely fubared...i'll get error messages and page can not be displayed types of things. So it says you have data, but in reality I only have it 80% of the time. Hell today I left work and tried to listen to Spotify on the way home and it was unlistenable...which is crazy considering I was leaving NCSU and driving up Capital through downtown. And don't even get me started on their "4G." Their voice service is better than their data, but not *that* much better. I still get dropped calls at a pretty high clip, especially frustrating when the bars go from 0 to 4-5 right after the drop (i'm assuming that's a handoff issue)
Still, with their discount it's nice to get unlimited everything for $75 OTD, but I'm getting to the point where I don't mind paying $30-$40 more for quality service and LTE via Verizon, especially considering Sprint is continuing to flood the towers with these low cost resellers.]11/14/2011 9:12:07 PM |

What's the verdict on this?
Is it useful??
Can you make a phone call from the side of the road stranded, or is it a good idea to keep a prepaid in the glove box or something?

Clark Howard said he was going to try this out. Not sure if he's posted results yet. 12/14/2011 1:45:34 PM |

there's a forum on their website with some discussions. I guess they've had some delays getting the phones out to the first batch of people but they should have them now.
I'm looking forward to hearing about this as it develops 12/14/2011 1:50:05 PM |

does anyone have information about when they will open this back up? I'm sick of verizon ripping us a new one every damn month. 170 bucks per month is just fucking ridiculous. 1/20/2012 7:48:44 AM |

Just curious... what service are you getting that's $170/month? I have 450 min/mo (some crazy amount of nights and weekends) and true unlimited data/texts on AT&T with two other lines for $150/month. 1/20/2012 9:18:20 AM |

Sounds appealing if you're primarily around wifi--while I'm covered at work and home, I would just be a bit leery of it just because I tend to make a lot of calls when I'm out and about, or in the car over a bluetooth link with the car audio But as the non-wifi goes, not sure what the deal is with people having shitty coverage with Sprint. I've been with them for 4.5 years (and for another 3 years '01 to '04) and have always enjoyed good coverage in the triangle. Other than one spot on I-40 where I my calls are reliably dropped (between exit 273 and 274 eastbound) and in my office (which is in the basement of a cinder-block and brick building) I rarely have problems.
Quote : | "Virgin Mobile has a $45/mo unlimited text/data 1200 minute plan. It's $35 if you drop to 300 minutes (additional minutes are .10 I think). I'm seriously considering dropping my iphone and getting an Optimus V for $120 from Virgin instead. " |
My girlfriend is switching to VM on this same plan and phone this weekend. Coming from T-Mobile where, after taxes/fees/etc, she was paying $40 for basic voice/text service on a non-smartphone. And while $45 != $20, it's still a far better deal than any of the traditional carriers. I may go that way myself since Sprint seems to have locked me out of any further upgrades on the old SERO plan.1/20/2012 11:06:22 AM |

tmobile through walmart has $45/mo unlimited everything prepaid.
I'm with Sprint and pay $125/mo for two lines with unlimited everything.
For the question about call switching, read the beta review from laptopmag.com:
Quote : | "Unfortunately, the phone doesn't seamlessly switch from Wi-Fi to Sprint's cellular network. When we strayed out of Wi-Fi range during an active call, our caller's voice stuttered and warped--all we heard for awhile were some incoherent syllables, followed by a brief silence. Then the call dropped. The same happens in reverse when you walk into range of a Wi-Fi hotspot from Sprint's network. Republic Wireless told us that by the time its service rolls out to the public by early- to mid-2012, it would have a seamless in-call setup that toggles back and forth between Wi-Fi and cellular networks." |
