BMI prob makes sense on a macro level for people who don't work out. Part of the problem is how it doesn't account for muscle mass. A tiny part of the problem is that it doesn't account for individual variations (bone density, bone/frame structure, etc). A lot of it is that we are collectively so fat now in America that we have a skewed perception of what constitutes "overweight".
...but yeah, BMI is totally worthless if you work out a lot.

That's me at about 185 lbs. I might be like 186-187 now, but that's pretty close. I'm 5'8", which gives me a BMI of 28--well into the "overweight" region, and approaching "obesity".

This was me at about 177 lbs...still right in the middle of the "overweight" range.
I'm not super lean and defined or anything, but I'm pretty comfortable with saying that I'm not overweight in that picture, haha.

Those BMI charts are definitely flawed. 5'8" or 5'9" 170-175. According to that chart I'm overweight, but I don't really think anyone who sees me would think that. I haven't lifted weights in several months, I used to lift regularly and weighed closer to 185...so according to that chart I'd have been close to being obese.
I'd say I'm at a pretty healthy weight...although it certainly would hurt me to drop a few pounds. 11/15/2011 6:42:25 PM

BMI isn't a useless statistic unless you assign fat levels to it. For insurance purposes, it is still a good indicator of cardiovascular health - your heart and lungs don't see much difference between muscle or fat, since they just see miles of extra arteries, veins and capillaries to pump blood through and deliver nutrients along.

that's me at approximately 6' and 250lbs. While I wouldn't assign the term "morbidly obese" to me, I would consider myself to have a lower life expectancy of a person of similar height and bodyfat composition with 50 less pounds of muscle on their frame. Scientific studies have shown repeatedly that smaller people and people who eat less live longer, and BMI does tend to reflect that fairly accurately. 11/15/2011 6:54:01 PM

I'm a solid 155lbs on a 6' frame @ 25 years old. I'm as lean as they come but my metabolism is still through the roof considering how inactive I am these days...
