^^ I don't care at all. She could throw that money in the river for all I care (if you're talking about me)

I want to know what it is that makes a watch worth 2k. For the purpose of this explaination I've accepted that watches can be worth that much, I want to know what makes them worth it.

Sparky, he gave me 1 carat diamond earrings for my bday after just 4 months together. That's why I think the watch is appropriate. Your line of thought is spot-on though. And I appreciate the advice.

in the $3k range, I'd definitely recommend an Omega.

Thanks for the recommendation, hgtran. Had heard of that brand but hadn't researched it yet. Any specific pros/distinctions of omega over, say, tag?

I'm going to throw this out there because you said:

Unless he's like OEPII1 and has like 50 friggin watches....I would hope you've seen him pick out a watch in a store and either get that exact watch or something similar.

Guys aren't like girls that have 50 sets of earrings and you can look at what they wear and pick out something similar that they would like.

If I'm getting a $2-$5K watch...I'm picking that mother fucker out. But again...return policy and all.

I highly doubt OEP is actually sitting on a quarter million dollars worth of watches guys.
He's just having a good time with you.

LOL ... definitely not. I've never given a gift like this ... but based on the gifts that he gives, I know I have to put a bit more thought into this. He said his parents got me an iPad for Christmas.

Tag Heuer and Breitling as where it's at

got this for my 18th birthday. still have it and I'm 25. It's the old Indy 500 model.

the only thing is when you get the battery changed you have to make sure to get the seals replaced by an authorized dealer. Sears claimed to change the seals but water got in and I had to send it to Tag and they had to replace the internals and it cost $500 and I was watchless for over a month

Also really like

tag carrera

I love that! That's what I had in mind.

I'll be sure to look into warranty issues and stuff., just to make sure I understand how to take care of it.

Haha, I was just listing brand names that make Omega, Tag Heuer, etc, seem like pedestrian brands. If I did have watches by all those brands, they would be worth several million dollars, not a quarter million

I got mine in the Caribbean from a place called Little Switzerland. you may be able to contact them and save on taxes but I'm not totally sure. Having a chronograph is awesome btw, especially if your bf is a diver.

^^ There's a Little Switzerland in Nassau, which is a quick flight for me and could be business-related. I'll call them tomorrow. Might be able to finagle a biz trip out there in the next few wks. Not a bad idea.

Not that I could possibly bring myself to spend so much on a watch, but I've always been partial to Omega and Breitling.

I don't know if you can get a new one at the $2k price point. I don't really stay up on their prices, because I'm not actually going to buy one.

Omega is much better built than Tag. In the watch world, it is a class above Tag.

Go to baileys and take a look at their Ball Watch collection. Very good looking watches and not a lot of people have them.

Thanks for all the suggestions! Turns out, his Mom already got him a watch for Christmas (one of the BMW watches--he just found out), so on to plan B:

Ski trip + leather laptop bag + fun goodies

I haven't bought the bag yet. Doing my research now. I love Tuni, but he'd prob be just as happy with a more practical brand. Thoughts?

And he's getting boudoir pics for the anniversary (2 wks after Christmas), so his mom can't compete with that one.

I like those, Skack! I was shooting for leather, but leather may not actually be the most practical option. And Tumi is definitely nice. Love the style.

If he's a traveler you might want to go with the ballistic nylon. Flying with one is pretty rough...Sliding it under your seat during takeoff/landing and whatnot is going to take it's toll. I think the ballistic nylon is well suited for that type of use.

If it's just going to go from the house to the office in the trunk of his car I probably would go with leather, but I'd consider something like this that can take on character and actually look better as time passes and it picks up a little wear:

can we talk about this watch? http://www.jcrew.com/mens_category/accessories/watchesandwatchstraps/PRDOVR~27460/27460.jsp

i like the way it looks but is that all it is? aesthetically pleasing? the reviews i've read online are REALLY mixed. they are either like "omg this watch" or "this watch is overpriced and not worth $150"

so now i'm confused. i don't want to spend more than $200 and the reason i was looking at THIS watch is because someone pointed it out to me when we were browsing at the mall. someone already has other nice watches and this is different from the other ones they have so...i dunno. are there other brands that have similar style watches that would be better? the watches posted by ncsuallday and oep are similar to the styles he already has so i was trying to find something more like the j crew watch which he mentioned he liked. but just after researching it i wasn't sure anymore...

i like the messenger bag idea too. but again my budget is $200 or less. i am not blingy like everyone else itt. HELP, tww men! HELP! please and thanks

similar style, but a citizen:

$135 on amazon.

I have a $25 off Orvis coupon you can have.

I think $150 is high for that watch. I'd go for the Seiko 5 instead:

http://www.amazon.com/Seiko-SNK805K2-Automatic-Green-Fabric/dp/B000LTAY1U/ref=pd_sbs_watch_3

I've actually got two of those Seikos...One in green as pictured and one in blue. They're good watches as long as you don't mind dealing with a self winding watch. Mine always have to be set whenever I wear them because I don't wear them every day.

Looks like Overstock.com has it for $85...Much cheaper than Amazon.

OMG AWESOME. thanks!!!!! that is perfect. he'd rather have a self winding watch anyway.

now for color. green, blue or beige? i like the beige face of the beige one but not crazy about the strap. so i think its between green or blue. i kinda like the green best. but the blue is pretty too. i think i'm gonna do green though. if he doesn't like it he can return it! thanks so much this is perfect (i think, anyway). its the style that he said he liked (so you can't change the band as easily as the timex, so what) but it seems like a much better watch for the $.

the good part about the jcrew timex watch is you can change the strap

maybe that's an option you should look for since you can't decide on the color?

I'm pretty sure any NATO style strap (try Google shopping) of the appropriate width should fit that Seiko.
I'd probably get the black one with the black face if you're planning to change bands around.
http://www.amazon.com/Seiko-SNK809-Automatic-Black-Strap/dp/B002SSUQFG

You can get a watch band removal tool from eBay for about $2 shipped.

Thanks, Skack! I went with the Tumi leather laptop messenger bag. I love the idea of the ballistic material, but he's really OCD neat ... so I know he'd really take care of the bag.

Luckily, if he doesn't like it, Tumi will exchange or give store credit through 1/31. Not too shabby.

Wish I were still getting a watch. Love the ones I'm seeing ITT.
