its illegal to kill or poach great whites in australia, new zealand, and south africa, i wish it was here as well. people dont want to make them endangered because they are not cute and cuddly like a stupid panda bear, but whites are the most awesome apex predator out there.

You can't say that for sure. The mating habits of great whites are still largely unknown to researchers. They still do not have any footage of them mating. 11/30/2011 4:00:20 PM

^^They implanted a lot of them with homing beacons and they spent all winter chilling off the coast of GA. Other than boning down what were they doing?
And regardless, they're still THERE which was the original point 11/30/2011 4:09:28 PM

Quote : | "Although the great white is typically regarded as an apex predator in the wild, it is in rare cases preyed upon by the larger orca (also known as a killer whale). Interspecific competition between the great white shark and the orca is probable in regions where dietary preferences of both species may overlap. An incident was documented on October 4, 1997, in the Farallon Islands off California. An estimated 4.7–5.3-metre (15–17 ft) female orca immobilized an estimated 3–4-metre (9.8–13 ft) great white shark. The orca held the shark upside down to induce the tonic immobility and kept the shark still for fifteen minutes, causing it to suffocate and then proceeded to eat the dead shark's liver. Another similar attack apparently occurred there in 2000, but its outcome is not clear. After both attacks, the local population of about 100 great whites vanished. Following the 2000 incident, a great white with a satellite tag was found to have immediately submerged to depth of 500 m and swum to Hawaii." |

^ I watched a special about those attacks. Some of the sharks went down half a mile and then swam to the other side of the goddamn world to get away from those orcas. Shit's amazing. 11/30/2011 6:22:05 PM

Great white sharks only live off the coast of south Africa from what I've learned. I am willing to bet this one was lost or sick (rabies) or something similar 11/30/2011 6:57:04 PM

Quote : | "A possible migration corridor has been identified for great white sharks on the east coast of the U.S. A satellite tagging study was initiated in the fall by the Massachusetts Division of Marine Fisheries and some of the early results are intriguing. It is possible that the great white sharks that appear off the New England coast during the summer months – suspected of feeding on seal populations there – travel south during the winter months based on the results of a tagged shark who has appeared as far south as Jacksonville, Florida. " |

Quote : | "Great White Sharks live in all coastal temperate waters, and have been known to occasionally make dives into the deep water of open oceans. They can be found in water as shallow as three feet deep, and as deep as 1280metres. They can be found on the following coastlines: California to Alaska, the east coast of the USA, most of the Gulf coast, Hawaii, most of South America, South Africa, Australia (except the north coast), New Zealand, Mediterranean Sea, West Africa to Scandinavia, Japan, and the eastern coastline of China to Russia." |
Great Whites are more common off the east coast then I think most people realize.
