This is an interesting question, and one that is hard to answer. I think that while it's easy sit back and compare actors who play the same "character", we also have to remember that this character might be called by the same name but the each incarnation becomes intricately different and have separate personalities and dispositions. With that in mind, comparing the actors, is one better than the other at portraying The Doctor is, in a way, complicated.

Christopher Eccleston did an incredible job with his version of The Doctor. He crafted his character and formed it to be a sort of foundation, something for future incarnations to build off of--that cold and brooding doctor, who suffered from his choices (being the sole survivor of the Time War) and became melancholy. He created this and let it take form. Does this make Eccleston better than Tennant?

I'm not sure.

David Tennant succeeded where Eccleston left off. He made this character his own, and formed it with a thoughtful purpose. And who's to deny the fact that with Tennant as the lead, the new revival of Doctor Who really took off? Tennant also benefited from, what seems to me, a bigger budget from the BBC and much better writing than Eccleston's season, BUT Tennant brought a more loveable humor to his character. He took a character from Eccleston who, well let's be frank, was a bit impetuous, and turned him into a light-hearted and sassy Doctor. And I think this is one of the reasons he's so endearing to his fans.


Plus the hair, he has some incredible hair.


So, in summation, I have mixed feelings. I believe both are incredible actors and brought to life such wonderful characters.

I didn't say I didn't like him. I just ranked him, which was really hard for me to do, I had to rewatch all the episodes and go through and figure out bits that I like and weigh whether they mean more to me than other bits. I really enjoy Smith but his character is a lot different so it's hard to rank but there it is. That is how my heart feels.

He is just more 'alien' than the Eccleston or Tennat. I feel like he's playing a more mature character as well (even though he's the youngest of them) like when he gets angry in 'The Best Below', 'Good Man Goes to War' etc.

lol really? I feel exactly the opposite. It's one of the major points I take away from him. I'll have to rewatch those episodes thinking of this and see. Do you have a good example episode from Tennant to compare and see what you're talking about? I'll watch them right after the other
