To put an end to the aforementioned 'revisionism ITT':
Yes (even before Advanced D&D); Yes; Yes if long hair, an old Air Force jacket, concert jerseys, and wide belts with a Lord of the Rings belt-buckle qualify; Nope; "anime" -what? Edit: weekend nights at the theatre watching late-night Star Wars I (now IV) replays and rock movies with Alice Cooper; the Stones; or Jimi Hendrix: or, at home in a blacklight poster filled room listening to Sabbath and Deep Purple - the best thing for doing Chem II (what was AP at the time), physics, or calculus.

but I did have a wide array of friends because I always played sports
it doesn't help that I ended up studying bugs

My school was extremely small and I was basically in every crowd - except we didn't really have preppy kids. I was certainly better at science / math but language skills were probably the most highly thought of at my high school.
Honestly for some reason I was one of the cool kids which doesn't make any sense... I think its because I had only cool kids in my middle school advisee group so from then on I was cool.

I definitely was a nerd. I still am. I am proud of it. Nobody really knew it though... I was mostly non-existent and kept to myself. My high school was quite large (graduating class was something like 560 people) and I wasn't part of any specific clique.
On a side note, I just started playing Dungeons & Dragons this year so my nerd cred has increased 6/13/2013 10:20:51 AM

I had about 450 in my graduating class, and my HS definitely had the standard cliques: jocks, preps (rich kids), thugs, wiggers, stoners, nerds, etc.
The interesting part about my school was that in included the richest neighborhood in Greensboro along with some of the poorest. The richest kids were all wanna-be rednecks. Their parents spoiled the hell out of them, but they tried their hardest act country. Sure, they all got $50k cars for their 16th birthdays, but they were jacked up trucks instead of BMWs. 6/13/2013 10:29:55 AM
