"@73, yes that is a goal I would like to reach too. I know it won't happen for me this year though bc of research and school. I imagine you cannot do much to prepare right now given the pregnancy. Do you have post pregnancy health plans? When would you be able to be in the shape you are speaking of?

Are you involved in any interest groups for rock climbing/hiking? I really like these because you get great advice and locations from the seasoned veterans. Do you have the equipment? Can you possibly find a group to plan a trip 2 years from now (or whenever you think this is feasible)?"

no post pregnancy health plans yet. we (Fumbler and i) just found out last week that we're pregnant, so it's still really early. not involved in any groups. i live in rocky mount & we don't have anything like that out here. the only climbing experience i have is with a church youth group when i was like 14-15 (climbed a handful of times), and once a year or so ago at a place in raleigh off glenwood. i don't have any climbing equipment. i have a lot of experience hiking & backpacking though, and do own all of that equipment. we spent a few days in maroon bells wilderness in CO this summer & slept at around 11,650ft.

Fumbler has a kid on the way , so right now isn't a great time to quit a steady paycheck, but there's always the future.

I think it is possible for him to hold down his current job and still take steps towards pursuing his passion

^^exactly. i didn't say he couldn't pursue anything. i just said it's not a good idea to quit a steady, basically guaranteed paycheck right before you have a kid.

well I don't think he would even be ready to quit that job until he had a real plan anyway, but I would never encourage a parent-to-be to quit a good job. But it is nice that you support him. He can start building a site (a good one will take some time given that he has a job and a baby on the way).

"1. summit real mountains (14k+)
2. get into rock climbing, better physical shape, etc...but i'm pregnant now so that's not going to happen anytime soon
3. proximity to real mountains, time (as in time off work), & money mainly. i guess i could shorten that to money bc if i had plenty of it, i could overcome the first 2 problems."

These became my main goals about two years into my PhD & realizing being an academic wasn't so important anymore. Happily I achieved all of them (and got the PhD) with the exception of the time-off-work part. It sucks being two hours from the best climbing in the lower 48 and only getting two weekends a month to do it. Still working on how not to work as much....

1. I have always wanted to do everything.
2. Stop trying to do everything.
3. Trying to do everything has held me back because I haven't really completed one thing to the fullest.

Drew a cartoon last night. And sold one to a website a few weeks ago. I think as my dislike for my full time job has continued to grow, my desire to do something I like has also increased. I'd never quit to do cartoons though unless I had a job somewhere doing it full time.
