I know this is about dogs, but I know several other animals, including exotic ones, adhere to exactly this policy because many states have gone as far as to outlaw ownership of certain pets. The idea being if an exotic animal gets out, it can't reproduce and cause problems that either (a) mess up the local ecosystem or (b) end up having babies that are feral and become a big enough concern to be outlawed. Ferrets are illegal in New York, IIRC.

It's always hard/immoral making legal decisions on stereotypes but... you know... the neighbors didn't get two pits because they thought they were these cut companions that could play with their kids.

wait...great danes?

wtf? they are by nature one of the more friendly dogs you'll find. is it just that these pussies are scared of the size of the dog?!

"it's not just an issue of dog fighting in Fayetteville. Most of the property owners probably have the meanest dogs they can get to deter crackheads from breaking into their homes and stealing shit"

I really hope this isnt some broad statement about how you think things in Fayetteville are

My pitt bull would totally love to play with kids. Obviously I have a dog in the fight (couldn't resist) but a dog of any breed can be raised to attack. The problem is the owners, not the breed, but that's based on me owning one pitt bull and finding them very different than the stereotype.

I take Sable out to parks and walk her around my neighborhood and try to let people see a well adjusted, friendly non-aggressive version also exists.

Of course; no argument from me. I'm sure you could train a teacup poodle to be a mean little fucker if you really tried, but I think the stereotype includes the owners as well. A guy I knew when I was at State was all about pit bulls and when you looked at him and saw how he acted you just kind of thought "yeah, you would."

Unfortunately, unless the culture that adores these dogs for their reputation starts taking responsibility for raising well behaved animals, that stereotype isn't going to change.

it doesn't help that pitbulls are a larger dog breed that are inordinately strong. A friend of mine got a pit bull for a pet/protection back when she used to live alone in an apartment. That dog is one of the friendliest dogs I've ever been around, and normally it would never hurt anyone. Unfortunately, one night I was passed out on the loveseat and another friend was passed out on the couch with the dog laying right beside him. Something outside spooked the dog in the middle of the night, and the dog jumped up to go see what was outside. In the process, he clawed a gash into the guy's face that bled like crazy and needed stitches to mend. It was just an accident and the dog didn't mean anything by it, but they have the capability to do a lot of damage sheerly because of their size.

While my cats tend to sleep on me and often get excited in the middle of the night and dig their claws in to take off, it's never anything more than a nuisance or a superficial scratch. Add 60 pounds of muscle to the animal, and it's a different story.

I still don't really understand what people expect the county to do when they have no money. In other countries they would just shoot the dogs in the street, throw them over cliffs into the ocean, eat them, etc. Unless there is a concerted effort by the community to limit the number of stray, breeding dogs in the county they will continue having to put thousands of dogs down. I wonder how many of the people living in Cumberland County that are up in arms would actually spend the time and money to educate others in the county on the benefits of fixing their pets.

^ I do agree with this. I just wish they weren't trying to discriminate so directly - that's my beef... just because a dog is a lab mix vs a pit mix doesn't make it more friendly.

^^i agree with you...I'm just glad that the public spoke up and at least knows the issue exists now.

hopefully this will end well with more effort on the part of the community to find a solution

I love my Boxer. She is the sweetest dog I have ever had. We've had Pit Bulls, German Shepherds, a Poodle, Labs and mixes of all kinds growing up and the most dangerous dog out of all of them was the Poodle, by far.

Meanest dogs I've ever met were Poodles. Of course, no one would admit to being attacked or scared by a Poodle.

And I'm sure a 100# dog would do worse... point is?

best solution - dont discriminate by breed. kill-em all and let the angels play fetch with them

[Edited on December 7, 2011 at 11:50 AM. Reason : ever been bit on the foot/ankle by a Heeler, unsuspectingly? yowza]

I've been threatened by Pit Bulls with my own dogs, but I've gotten bit by both a small Rat Terrier mix and a Dachshund. I despise any dog under 10 lb, because I think owners let them get away with much more than large dogs.

the only dog I've been physically bit by was a poodle. I wouldn't describe the situation as scary though, because after I knocked it off of my ankle I punted it across the yard.

I've had a chihuahua bite my boot before. I was more annoyed by the sounds that dog made moreso than by it trying to bite me.

I've been bit by a Rottweiler, an English Setter, and Cocker Spaniel. Hated dogs for yeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeears. Shitty dog owners own all sorts of breeds.
