now if you didnt have on a ring and were just dating someone that should somehow work into the conversation within the first few minutes if someone's offering to buy you a drink

If he was wearing his uniform at the time, he might've thought she was buying him a drink as a 'thank you' for his service. Although I think that's something guys typically do.
