Cash to me just means there is zero chance of having an offer fall through because they couldn't get financing. There are plenty of people who go shopping first and find out they can't get financing after they've already made an offer.
On a smaller footnote, a lot of banks require someone from the bank to see the vehicle before they'll finance. It's usually not a big deal...You ride to the bank and let them notarize the documents while you're there. If the person's bank is out of town this can become a headache though. Saying they have cash means you don't have to deal with any of this stuff.
I bought a Jeep Wrangler probably 8 years ago and ran into the second issue. I was buying it from a guy in Wilson who owned a very successful small business. He was not going to take time off from his lucrative business to drive to Raleigh and let my bank see the vehicle; nor would I expect him to. To make matters worse, someone offered him full asking price ($500 less than I had negotiated), so he would have gladly let our deal fall through. I ended up having to pay with a cashier's check drawn from my own account because my bank refused to finance it without seeing it first. You can always take out a bank loan on a vehicle that you own if you find yourself needing the cash back.

I'll let him know there's interest in it as is, but like I said $10k was just off the top of his head, he might think about it and change his mind.. I'm not really sure he knows I'm peddling his car
Also, it won't start as it is. He thinks it's just a dead battery but he couldn't "pop the clutch" or whatever you manualers do to start it either.

I should have some spare time later this afternoon after work. If anyone would like I can walk down there and snap a bunch of photos. Then I can post them on here and give everyone an idea of the car's condition.
Of course between sitting on the street and before that just sitting in the driveway this car hasn't been driven (at all) in over a year. I'm sure that has degraded the tires, if not anything else

I'll take some tomorrow. Didn't have time to snap any photos but I did walk by it when walking my dog. I actually took a pic with my iPhone of the VIN, but it might not be legible.
The tires seemed to have 60% tread or so, and they're Michelin Pilot Sports. I also noticed that the lower plastic window trim is brittle, cracking and falling apart. 4/16/2012 11:18:34 PM |

There is some minor road rash on 3 of the 4 wheels and the aforementioned cracking window trim. As to the front end damage the hood and grill parts need to be replaced. The bumper might need to be replaced...at the least it needs to be repainted. Otherwise the exterior looks fine to me. Didn't notice any door dings or scratches.

If it really hasn't moved a foot in the last year, you're going to need tires as well. Brakes would probably be OK but sitting outside for a year isn't the best way to treat a car. :/ 4/18/2012 8:52:27 AM |

A proper OEM bumper, hood, and paint will probably be $3k by themselves. If a body shop quoted the visible repairs at less than $3.5k I'd be very surprised. That's assuming the fenders didn't get tweaked. Add to that a new battery, a couple hundred in fluids, tires, window trim, and the unknowns and I think the $2k budget you're talking about will get blown out of the water. Make it $4k-$5k or start searching for used parts or ways to cut corners and you might be ok. Like Ahmet said...It probably needs deserves a set of tires and that's going to be $1k+ right off the bat if you do it right.
I'm still game on taking on this project, but you've got to be realistic about what you're getting into. I'm not going to have a nice M3 sitting beside my house for 9 months while I wait to find a cheap used hood in the color I need. I'd just get it done and start enjoying it.

^^ No.
You don't need to change the tires just because a car has sat for a year... I've seen cars sit for 10 years and the tires were still fine. It depends on a number of things. Obviously tires sitting outside in weather will deteriorate faster than tires inside of a garage but you don't need to replace them just because the car has been stationary for 12 months. If that were the case I'd need to replace about six or seven sets of tires on the cars in the garage right now. 4/18/2012 11:27:36 AM |

How many times have you done this with z-rated tires? They harden much quicker than your normal car/truck tires and when they do their grip is practically nonexistent. A 300HP car would be quite sketchy on an old set of hardened rubber.

Do you really think just because a tire is Z-rated it's harder? The speed rating has little to do with the hardness or softness of the tire. That's the treadwear rating you're thinking about. Some Z-rated tires are harder by nature of the fact that they have a lower treadwear rating but that's all.
Anyway, there are three cars in the garage right now that have been sitting over a year on TW200 or less rubber (Michelin Pilot Sport Cups on one of them, '09 ZR-1 - which is a TW80 semi-slick) that haven't been moved in nearly a year. The ZR-1 hasn't been moved since September. I've also seen Hoosier slicks sit for well over a year and then taken to a track immediately. There will be a layer of hardened rubber on top and then fresh soft grippy rubber beneath. Hoosiers can probably sit for 2-3 years in a climate controlled garage, probably significantly less if they've been rained on over and over, but that's a RACE CAR tire we're talking about here, not a Michelin Pilot Sport.

From the factory I doubt they have more than 1 degree, IF THAT. Armchair racers for the win.

I'd be interested in this car if it really was $10k as another track car, even though completing the deal would be a pain. Where is the owner anyway? It wouldn't need much to be track ready. You'd have it running with just a battery, some water, a quart or two of oil and a few gallons of fresh fuel. Might be a few codes in the ECU since BMWs are a little finnicky but I'm sure it wouldn't be anything major. 4/18/2012 11:56:08 AM |

(the only tire i would not run after sitting on a car, in the weather, for a year would be a bias-ply drag slick) 4/18/2012 12:02:10 PM |
Skack All American 31140 Posts user info edit post |
Z-rated tires generally have a low treadwear rating. No need to argue semantics.
TKE-Teg said these tires have an estimated 60% tread left. We're not talking about a set of tires that were put on 12 months ago right before the car was parked. What's going on in your climate controlled garage with practically zero UV light is also irrelevant.
Even if there is any good rubber underneath the hardened rubber I'm sure there is going to be a lot left after you do a big smokey burnout to burn it off. Oh yeah, and this is an M3, not a drag car, so you might want a little grip in the fronts too.
Sure, you could buy this car, pass inspection, and pimp it up and down Glenwood South on the tires that are on there. If you're really going to drive it I suspect you'll want something else.

^You didn't say anything about UV light, which could be a main cause of this rubber deteriorating.
I stuck my hand into the rear passenger fender well to feel the tread depth. The tread felt fairly slick (compared to anything on either of my cars).

Really? For a whole year? What a waste.
I'd imagine any high performance tire would be practically undrivable after sitting outside, unmoved for a year (in part because they'd be unacceptably out of round. You'd want to inflate them quite a bit, store them inside and off the car if possible, but you knew that). Street Pilot Cups are out of round enough to keep me below 160 after sitting for two months, Even if your fleet of Bugatti Veyrons drive fine on track after sitting for a year.
Alignment Specs for a factory e46 M3: Front: ------- Camber: -1.3 to -0.7 degrees Caster: +6.9 to 7.9 degrees Toe in: 0.08 to 0.19 degrees
Rear: ------ Camber: -2.0 to -1.5 degrees Toe in: 0.13 to 0.23 degrees
The car may just need fresh fluids, or there may be another issue that justified abandoning it for a year on the side of the road. We only know what was said here, namely that it has "a few small issues to keep it from running". To be clear, I'm not saying that it's a bad deal, just that it may not be as good as one may imagine.4/18/2012 1:26:31 PM |
jsausley All American 1031 Posts user info edit post |
What you're talking about is storing tires for REALLY extended periods of time (I'm talking 3-5+ years). I've never noticed any tire flat spotting with a year. In fact, I recently drove a car back from someone's house where it had been sitting for AT LEAST 5 years and all we had to do was add air to the tires, change the battery, throw some fresh 93 in it and go. This was a 2000 SS Camaro, by the way. Obviously a BMW would be a little more finnicky. I would definitely expect a flurry of thrown ECU codes. You'd probably need to replace the MAF, for example, and maybe some other sensors, if it had been sitting outside for 5 years without running. But a year would not kill a car nor its tires. Sorry brah.

What can I say, my experience thus opinions differ from yours.
Pilot Sports on a Porsche GT3 that sat for a month outside were shaking badly enough to stay below 160mph on track from terrible vibration.
Azenis on M3 sitting for 4 months shaking terribly, and lacked grip on track even after several sessions.
Hoosiers sat for a year after several heat cycles (climate controlled), grip down to about regular street tire levels even after heat cycling and multiple sessions. They were stored off car and inside, were not out of round. I used them further till they were worn.
RE-011R Bridgestones drive like square blocks for days after sitting only a few weeks.

Cool, good for him.. I know lots of instructors at local tracks but I don't see why that's relevant to his car's top speed on a track.
For you armchair racers, check this video:

Max speed on the straight is 154 MPH, which is right around what I've seen on that track in the same car ('09 ZR-1). I think I got up to 152 or so, so sue me.
If you're full throttle before coming out of hogpen you're probably in something very slow and not something with almost 650 HP...
