2.
Point taken.
And for the record, I'm not advocating he take the day off insomuch as I'm advocating he realize exactly what he's doing here, and the repercussions that could result from both sides.
If he decides it's worth it, that's his choice. I honestly won't judge the guy either way.
and ironically enough, I'm unemployed BECAUSE I went for more money. I left a low-paying, high-stress job because, even though I had accumulated enough leave, my boss refused approve time off to take the bar exam. This wasn't a busy time period (nowhere close to end of the fiscal year), and I only put in for a week, which, after being rejected, I put in for just the 2 days of the exam, which was rejected again. When I sat down with him to discuss it, his words were that I didn't have his respect, because it was obvious that I was taking the Bar to get leverage for a raise (some truth to this) or leave entirely (not true). In his mind, because my job didn't require a bar license, it was a waste of his, and my time, and therefore he wouldn't approve those days off.
I was angry enough to hit him, but I let cooler heads prevail. I just walked at that point. They really didn't give me a choice. Unfortunately for me, I didn't pass. I'm sure they got a good snicker out of that. But it's ok, because now my future is in my hands. Something will come along.
But it had nothing to do with family or God.
tl;dr My boss was a dick who wouldn't let me take the bar, and that's why i'm unemployed. Not family or religion.
Sorry to hijack the thread. Now back to your regularly scheduled hate speech.

Yesterday, they said "No...You must work from 3:00 PM til 12:00 AM" to my request, so I wrote a letter to the main boss saying that I had spiritual and moral obligations to attend church with my family on Christmas Eve. I explained that our Christmas Eve tradition is 29 years running and is tied in with celebration of Christ's birth. I told them I could work from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM but I'd have to leave at 6:00 PM. Then I went home and brushed up on Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 in case they tried to give me a hard time, or to coerce me in any way. When six o'clock rolled around I asked to leave and they sent me on my way. Smart decision on their part...

Because he's basically boo hooing that he can't hang out with his family on the day he wanted to? It's not like his boss is saying, "No you can't go to church ever or I'll fire you."12/28/2011 9:15:45 AM |

I have an idea! Let's dig up a 2-week old thread about someone working on Christmas just so we can argue the exact same points a SECOND time about the relevance of Christmas to religion, how stupid religion is, or how TragicNature is being a little wimp for not being willing to work on Christmas. That'll probably yield a lot of productive discussion.

Half-truth.
a) People have an estimate of Christ's birth. you would be correct in saying no one knows the EXACT day, but there's enough information to give a good estimate of December 25th-January 6th. The date itself is really irrelevant though, as it's just an annual marker for the celebration.
b) Christmas cultural traditions (tree, yule log, santa, gifts, etc) may have come from pagans and the exact day it's celebrated may have nothing to do with the birth of Christ... but the definition of Christmas IS actually a commemoration of Christ's birth. And while the holiday as it's now celebrated with all these traditions and customs, wasn't originally celebrated in the same way.

There's still debate on the actual year Jesus was born, much less the actual day. And I'm totally fine with it being a celebration of Jesus' birth, but Christmas carries almost zero religious weight.
If TragicNature were making this argument about Easter or Passover as a devout Christian/Catholic, then I would be 1000x more understanding.1/11/2012 5:27:16 PM |

Yea, true, but Christmas (birth of Jesus) does hold relevance as it's the first coming of Christ. While not important specifically to our salvation, it's important for a lot of other reasons as a fulfillment of prophecy. 1/11/2012 6:54:29 PM |

On another note, Ecclesiastes is probably my favorite book of the Bible. Pretty much a rich man's existential and quasi-nihilistic ramblings about life.

Just saw this thread, and even though it's too late, thought this might help answer your question:

Very Christian sentiment. I don't doubt your faith is sincere and you really were motivated by your desire to worship your Lord and Savior and you weren't just being a bitch about working on Christmas Eve.1/14/2012 11:45:24 AM |
