I liked the premise of post-apocalypse involving vampires. The enormous cast of characters was fun and suspenseful because I was never exactly sure who was about to die. The supernatural bits were fascinating and made me want to know where the series was going. I'm sure a lot of this is due to it reminding me somewhat of World War Z with its huge cast of characters, long timeline, and apocalyptic qualities.

Did you like World War Z? That's one I'd like to knock out this year too.

Game of Thrones is a great series, but you should definitely read The Name of the Wind and its sequel first. They were amazing.

Why should I read them first? Or are you just saying they're better, so move them ahead on the list?

Have you read any of the Terry Goodkind books? I just finished Wizard's First Rule a few weeks ago, and enjoyed it, but I heard the sequels are not as good.

The Name of the Wind is a different sort of fantasy than Game of Thrones. I found Game of Thrones to be pretty dry at first, but it's a slow burn that builds up as you become familiar with characters, custom, and history. It's rewarding due to the complexity of its story and the relationships among the characters. Each has human motivations for wanting what they want though they end up at odds.

The Name of the Wind is focused one fascinating characters adventures around a colorful world; because of this I enjoyed it more. You quickly get a feeling for who the protagonist is as a person, and yet even though he (mostly) learns about the world as you do, he surprises you with his insight and actions.

I loved Wizards First Rule and several of the Terry Goodkind books thereafter. He was one of my favorite for a while, but the later books in the series begin to get somewhat preachy with the Ayn Rand themes. Still, it's a colorful world with a great cast of characters. I loved Richard, Kahlan, Zedd, and Adie.

I finished When She Awoke by Hillary Jordan, and while it was an interesting take on The Scarlet Letter, I'm not sure I liked it? The concept was fascinating, but parts felt predictable and cliche. I think her previous book, Mudbound, was better.

Next up is probably one of Malcolm Gladwell's since I let one of my students borrow my planned read, Koontz's Forever Odd.

1. No Country For Old Men - Cormac McCarthy
2. The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest - Stieg Larsson

NCFOM was a fun read. I liked the existential prose and humor. The last in the Millenium Series blew. Well, mostly. Tough to follow the second.

The Shining is next.

what part was that? so many parts made me sad. i have a guess as to which part you're referring to, though. i'll PM you so as not to spoil it for anyone. they're so fast paced i didn't really get the chance to be sad at any one point. when i finally finished reading the series (i recommend reading them back to back!) i just lay in my bed for 10 minutes and cried. i think in part because i was letting myself finally grieve different events from the books, but also just because i was done with all of them.

i am lame.

Rule 34 was a very interesting read. It's a near future tecno-mystery/thriller told in second person. It is set in Scotland and talks alot about blackmarket sex trade and porn. There is some def wtf stuff towards the end. Good stuff.

January 1, 2012

2. Loose Girl: A Memoir of Promiscuity - Kerry Cohen
