Pissed? No.
The guy wanted some honest advice and I gave it to him. Most people who label themselves as audiophiles are just prestigious self-righteous douchebags. They can't leave their feels at the door and judge something honestly. They're the same douchebags who scoff at a Lexus while they hug their piece of shit BMW. I have honestly heard BMW fans say that Lexus's handle too well. They're too comfortable. I like to think if I'm going to spend 65K on a car, that it's not going to be a piece of shit with such piece of shit being marketed as a good thing. "That poor handling, well it's intentional. It's a "challenge."" No. It's shitty engineering combined with good marketing with a prestigious label. That is exactly what you're getting with Sienheiser, bose, ect. People are willing to overlook Sienheiser's and Bose's flat bass, murky midtones and bled out treble all for the brand.
Then these same douches will then upsell their favorite brand's downfalls and downplay the strengths of the brand they don't like. Shit like "It has too much bass. I don't like the treble and the bass is bleeding into the midtone." Really? Of course the Sienheiser's treble will sound "clearer" when it has no bass. It's like listening to a fire alarm in a quiet building with Sienheisers vs listening to the same fire alarm with barry white singing in your ear.
Quote : | "I bet this kid goes to Best Buy regularly, so perhaps he should have read reviews about Farts audio directly from their site:" |
Out of 59 reviews, 38 are 5 stars and 11 are 4 stars. The rest are the prestigious douches I am talking about.
You're the perfect example of what I am talking about. You have talked more about Dr. Dre and the Monster branding and nothing about the actual quality of the sound, which is all the matters, unless of course you are a prestigious self-righteous douche bag.1/2/2012 1:44:13 AM |

So let me get this straight...
According to merbig, I should buy headphones made by a company who has:
1. All but admitted blatant false advertising to consumers. 2. Is blacklisted from certain places online. 3. Has told flat-out lies about endorsements. 4. Fuels places like Best Buy with markups equating to huge profit margins. 5. Thinks it owns the rights to anything with Monster in the title and has threatened other companies with severely asinine and ridiculous lawsuits.
...and I could go on and on from here. Also this:
Quote : | "On April 1, 2008, Monster Cable sent a cease and desist letter to Blue Jeans Cable,[19] claiming infringement on certain patents[14] owned by Monster Cable. The owner of Blue Jeans Cable, Kurt Denke, previously a litigation lawyer, responded with a letter detailing flaws and shortcomings in the allegations of patent infringement, adding "Not only am I unintimidated by litigation; I sometimes rather miss it."[20]" |
LOL.
Dude, you're entirely out of your element. I'm not sure what your argument is, but it sounds like you think "audiophile" means "hipster" or something.
Also, though you were talking about cars with this:
Quote : | "It's shitty engineering combined with good marketing with a prestigious label." |
...you're trying to make some sort of correlation to headphone makers; especially ones that have essentially zero (0) marketing, let alone "good," and that these companies strive on word-of-mouth advertising because their products are well-made and have a reputation within the types of people who care about how something sounds. And they also don't have to pay someone like Dr. Fucking Dre to appeal to teenage knowitalls, and wieners like you.
Overall, the point is that you have headphones that you paid $200 for, you got ripped off, they say Dr. Dre on them, you realize all of this is what makes you suck - it is the PINNACLE of suckage, and you're in some sort of zone where you don't want to feel like you're the only one who basically got robbed by Dr. Dre and Monster. But don't worry, you're in a demographic. Unfortunately, that demographic is not "audiophile."
By the way, the Best Buy thing wasn't meant as a compliment. People are lucky enough that the company didn't take those negative reviews of their site, since Monster products are a huge reason why companies like Best Buy and HH Greg stay alive.
To reiterate one last time:
Your
Headphones
Say
Dr. Dre
On
Them.

I see you're just too big of an idiot to look past the brand and the name on the headphones to recognize that they are the best headphones out right now. When the others can catch up, I will consider them. But until then, have fun with your prestigious brands. When you can contribute something beyond "Dr. Dre, LOL! Best Buy, LOL! Monster, LOL! They sucks, so the headphones suck, LOL!" we will talk. As it stands, you haven't even tried to headphones or even made any comparisons to other headphones yourself.1/3/2012 2:33:33 AM |

I remember when guitar stores were pushing the top line Monster cable really hard around 2000.
Friend of mine bought two 10-foot cords for some ridiculous sum like $55 a piece. They were two of the lousiest-sounding, poorest-shielded guitar cables I've ever dealt with. The $5 store brand ones were quieter.
Anything Monster has been a joke to me ever since. 1/3/2012 1:17:59 PM |

I have a pair of Etymotic MC-5 IEMs that I use for shows. They have no bass, but the mids are almost as good as my ribbon tweeter monitors and it only cost 69.99.
I also have a pair of closed cans, Senheiser HD-580, that cost 99.99 from guitar center. Been happy with them, they are very comfortable and very isolated, and the frequency response is decent. They are good for referencing your mixes on them.
My monitors are samson rubicon r5as. They rock. ribbon tweeters have fast mid-hi response and it is quite vibrant. They don't put out enough bass and people suggest pairing it with a sub.
I've heard rokit krks (the popular yellow cone monitors) and I'm not a fan of their midrange response.
My room isnt treated but i dont consider it a studio either. 1/4/2012 5:56:35 PM |

The beats IEMs suck. The nicer beats over-the-ear headphones are decent but they're way too heavy on the bass and require some tuning to get anything audible out of them.
Quote : | "Have you tried listening to a cd? An iPod touch isn't a great source to be using with high level headphones." |
Not really true at all. Depends on the headphones but the newer iPod touches and iPhone 3gs-4s have decent internal audio amps/processors. You're obviously not going to get the clean powered sound of a home theater amp but they're not half bad.
The biggest factors are:
1. source file 2. head phones
Once you tackle both of those THEN you can start thinking about buying a portable headphone DAC/amp combo for a phone/mp3 player. Getting a decent set of headphones is going to do waaaay more than switching from an iPod to a larger amp if you're starting with a shitty pair of head phones from get-go.
If any of you own nicer IEMs I highly suggest custom sleeves. Many companies make them and you can even get in-home sets to make the molds but you'll typically get a better set if you go into an audiologist. These guys make decent ones:
http://www.sensaphonics.com/
I've got a pair of Shure SE535s. Tested out a few amps with my iPhone but truthfully the lower impedance/higher sensitivity IEMs don't really need amps with some of the newer phones.
You SHOULD have a level actuator with you though. It'll help to knock out some of the extraneous buzz you get from laptops and cell phones.
Basically the nicer the headphones you have the less need for an expensive amp. If you ARE interested in a decent portable DAC/amp these guys are good:
http://www.headamp.com/pico/index.htm
or these guys:

neodata686 All American 11577 Posts user info edit post |
I believe the on-board USB is only for a computer for an external sound card.
The ipod line out dock cable:
http://www.amazon.com/FiiO-L1-Line-Cable-iPhone/dp/B003G8GZV6
Basically bypasses the built in dac/amp and sends the signal straight out to the external dac/amp from an ipod/iphone.
http://www.amazon.com/FiiO-E7-Portable-Headphone-Amplifier/dp/B003E6K1VK
Also another cheap popular dac/amp combo. Decent Wolfson DAC. Although I don't know if I'd use the FiiO on an iPod/iPhone these days. Maybe a laptop with a shitty sound card. Probably won't notice a huge difference on newer phones/mp3 players.
