if he did NOT have the knife, the worst that would have happened is a kid got his ass kicked, went home, shook it off, and the kid who did it could be prosecuted instead of some sort of vigilante justice killing.

in a regular fight the dead kids friends would have just jumped in and probably seriously injured him.

If he did NOT have the knife, the worst that would have happened is a kid got his ass kicked, went home, cried in frustration, blamed the world around him, and showed up at school a few days later with an assault rifle, killing innocents.

This was a kid who was bullied. He stood up to that bully. The bully paid a price for his actions, and that's too bad... but this could have been much worse.
