Came in to post this. I did a girlfriend's birthday there once and also it is where I made my family go for graduation dinner. The service is great and the food is even better.

Cody's next door was very polite though

LOL Years ago, I got sick while eating at Sushi Blues and I did not want to occupy their one bathroom all night so I went next door to the extremely empty Cody's and they let me use their restroom. I was on a date with pilgrimshoes at the time. Its probably why he never called again

I wish Anotherthyme in Durham was still open. Cafe Parizade in Durham is delish. So is Nana's.

Fearrington House is really cool, but prob a bit far.

For Raleigh, I LOVED Margaux's. May be too pricy, but it's delish. Humble Pie is low-key, but good for a date night.

Hayes Barton Cafe? I was going to mention this place...maybe not 1 year anniversary material but I enjoyed it the one time I went.

"Hey, expand this to Durham, too."

Aha!
-604 W. Morgan, in West Village on the perimeter of downtown. One of the best dinners I've had in a very long time. Upscale Italian in another very cool setting.

-I'll second Parizade. Went there with the gf just a couple of weeks ago. Food was outstanding, cool decor too. Odd location though (bottom floor of the incongruous office tower near Duke).

-Rue Cler is another good one. Small, nice location downtown, French food, good but not snooty.

-Will agree with vinylbandit on the Lantern. Definitely anniversary-worthy. And their bar kicks ass also (it's completely separate from the main restaurant, way in the back down a hallway).

Forgot one: Coquette Brasserie ... I went a couple of years ago and it was fab. Not the most exciting part of town, but loved the food and ambiance.

Roommate is a server at second empire, place is very nice. I clean the fish tank at margauxs which is also nice, but not as good as it was a few years ago. Saint Jacques is supposed to be amazing French

I second Vinnies and Sitti

Sullivan's used to be my favorite steakhouse, but the service and food quality has fallen off the last couple of times we've been. Vinnies has been consistently good. If you have never been I would highly recommend giving it a shot. I've never had anything but the steak there (which are awesome) so you might wanna check out the menu online.

Nana's or Bloomsbury Bistro. Yeah, there are better places, but they'll impress and not break your wallet like some of the others.

The Chinese graduate students I worked with recommended 35, I enjoyed it, but you do have to be ready for some authentic Chinese (some of it is sorta off the wall). Its food from southwestern China (thats how they described it, I had no idea chinese food varied that much by region). A lot of it was pretty spicy (hot) which I enjoyed.

Other than that I'll echo Irregardless. I just don't think you can go wrong there.

Good call on Shuckers, begonias. I dream about their food. That said, the ambiance isn't romantic or intimate ... But the food is amazing!

Oh yeah! I forgot. Have been to the new location once. It's not bad. Def more polished. And for seafood lovers, def the best in Orlando. I worked at 42nd St for years and loved their oysters, but Shuckers can't be beat. Best of its kind in the triangle.

Went to the Angus Barn tonight with some sales guys from work. Place is pretty great I thought. The Chef tables in the kitchen would be an awesome dining experience. Toured the wine cellar too, which is very nice.

Meh.

Saint Jacques and Vin Rouge are way better for French food (although Saint Jacques may be "too snooty" depending on OP's definition of snooty).

Oh man, Vin Rouge

My parents took me there for my birthday this past year (old chef at J. Betskis had just gotten hired as the new head chef at Vin Rouge)

Was amazing. Ate escargot for the first time. Definetly a nice date place.
