As far as I know, almost nobody cares about the non-working poor. I mean, public and private programs are in place specifically so we won't have to "worry" about them (or their children)...there's still a lot to worry about of course, but we definitely don't.
Romeny's focus on the middle class reflects nearly everybody's position on what "matters."
The quote in the first post applies to the working poor/most middle class Americans. Given that the working poor don't qualify (or know that they qualify) for a lot of the programs Romney listed...I think it's appropriate to assume he intended to include the working poor in the list of folks he's concerned about.
In short: Romney's "VERY POOR" = "NON-WORKING POOR," and Romney's right...almost nobody cares...the whole point of the programs is to satisfy the small level of care we have.

^^^I don't care if we play it or not.
I'm basically a Democrat...and could care less about Romney.
Regardless, no president in recent history has ever made an issue about caring about the "very poor." The "very poor" don't vote, and the very poor do almost universally qualify for programs that are already in place. Local politicians are in a position to help the very poor (get jobs or better jobs), but presidents can't do much, and they know it. They all run on supporting the middle class. Romney is right in line with everybody else, including Obama and every president we've had in like the past thirty years. 2/1/2012 7:08:03 PM

So it's basically: I'm not worried about it, there's already a safety net in place. Turned into: OMG he said he's not worried about it.

^^I work with the very poor. Hopefully, that status can relieve me of the "Mildred" label...and I reckon it will make you the Mildred until you reveal the action you've taken to help the very poor (besides get sassy in chit chat). Then we can both be non-Midlreds!!!

Hey, F you MILDRED. I help the poor often by volunteering many weekends in a kitchen in Columbia Heights. I logged over 100 hours last year. So stuff that in your twisted vagina and do a couple of sit ups 2/1/2012 7:23:51 PM

^^But that's what I'm saying...in your experience with the very poor, do you think there are any national politicians that can really affect them in some super meaningful way? Do you think any national politicians are focused on the very poor as a group? Do you think the vast majority of folks actually care about the very poor people you work with?
What makes Romney's comments different than the attitudes of any other presidential candidates we've had?
(In my opinion, the most openly class-oriented presidential candidate we've had in ages is John Edwards, and I would have voted for him if he was an option. He was ridiculed for focusing too much on class. And obviously he also didn't get elected.) 2/1/2012 7:34:25 PM

I don't know what else to say or how else to say it. Romney sucks big time. No doubt.
But not caring about very poor people is not some sort of exceptional faux pas for presidents.
I'm sorry if I've said something wrong or said it in the wrong way. I hope you'll continue your work with the very poor and continue to vote for all these presidential candidates who express their concern for the very poor--please inform me of who these candidates are so I can vote as you do! 2/1/2012 8:11:12 PM

I think it's because his statement was true and accurate.
The very poor are often people who just don't care. You can tell them everything in the world, and they would be perfectly content living in a teepee just watching the grass grow.
I don't fault people for this, because in any animal population, you're going to have perspectives that fit a normal distribution, so we must accept this element of our species. And in a civilized society this means that these people aren't wasting away on the streets like you see in Somalia and India, but instead stay out of everyone's way via being fed and housed, and making sure their children at least have as fair a shot as everyone else (because apples do often times fall far from their tree).
Romney basically pointed out why pure capitalism can't work, and why we need social programs. 2/1/2012 8:20:59 PM

and he was the most two-faced and hypocritical about it. he didn't give a fuck about the poor any more than anyone else. hell, he fucked with the local poor around his house all the time and told them to fuck off when they had concerns. he just said whatever he thought would get him elected; that, and he smiled a lot and put his thumbs up in the air. typical politician 2/1/2012 9:43:28 PM
