"Panthers coach Ron Rivera revealed at the Combine Thursday that free agent Jeremy Shockey spoke of retirement after the season.
It's common for players over 30 to consider calling it quits just after the end of regular seasons, but Shockey has been injury prone in recent years and his body is beginning to break down. "With him, you never know," Rivera said. Shockey has not played a full 16-game season in his 11-year career. In 2011, the 31-year-old caught 37 passes for 455 yards and four touchdowns. "

So do we go Brockers at 9, then a corner in round 2? I kinda like that since it seems the draft is a bit more CB-heavy than DT-heavy and the DT depth falls off faster, and the Giants have continued to prove that the pass rush is more important than the shut down corners since they make the overall secondary not have to cover as long. Plus a solid DT will let a healthy Beason skeet all over the field without getting blocked as much.

I'm intrigued by that 346 pound motherfucker out of Memphis Dontarie Poe who killed at the combine in everything, but he might be a reach over Brockers, and I think he's probably sparked some GM's intrigue and doubt he's there for us in the 2nd round. I also doubt Janoris Jenkins will be there in the 2nd round but he is gonna be a stud.

Looking at all the mock drafts after the combine though, somebody is gonna probably trade up to get RG3, and because of that, there's a slightly fatter slim chance somebody like Claiborne might be there at 9. Also, even though I shouldn't read too much into the combine results compared to the Saturday results, I think Stephen Hill is an exception. If he is there in the 2nd round for us I think we have to go after him. He also beasted at the combine, and his pedestrian stats can easily be accounted for by the fact he was a wide receiver for Georgia Tech in a Paul Johnson scheme. For all we know he's the next Megatron (ok not quite) and was just a victim of PJ's option offense.

I never realized watching all the combine shit could be so intriguing, but it is. They kind of run out of stuff to talk about, though. Yesterday Mayock didn't know if the Oscars were from movies or TV and Eisen and Deion ripped on him for like 15 minutes hahaha.

I think he's going to be the best corner in the draft when we look back on it. The guy is like a gnat in coverage ... he's small, but his quickness/reactions are off the chart. Also has some elite-level return skills.

Yep, he's arguably the most talented CB in the draft, and the fact that there's a good chance he'll still be there in the 2nd makes you realize just how much baggage he has

eh, i think Richardson will loosen up. enough time has passed since the Carruth debacle. Brandon Hogan had some issues as well, but we drafted him. granted, Jenkins is rolling a few samsonites behind him, but pure talent is difficult to look past. if you can grab an impact player, and feel that your coaching staff and front office can keep him in line, go for it.

if you want a team that will compete for super bowls, you have to take chances. i think one of the reasons the Panthers peaked and subsequently imploded was because they never took risks on players with talent. there are only so many "good guys" with talent to go around. they're running a football team, not a seminary.

Dales - I don't disagree with you at all really... except when I read your post, I immediately thought of Dwayne Jarrett.

However, I think he was just more of a bust than taking a risk on talent?

here's another of his articles I came across http://sports.yahoo.com/nfl/news?slug=ycn-10565325

funny how in the ^^^^^^article he says passing wins Super Bowls, yet in the one I linked in this post he's all on Tebow's nuts saying the opposite...

here's my favorite part

Quote :
"Tebow may be revolutionizing the way we evaluate quarterbacks. Instead of praising the 40-touchdown/4,000-yard quarterback, maybe we should value the 0-turnover/efficient-scoring guy? Instead of pointing out Tebow's numerous passing flaws, we should recognize that he is outplaying the best quarterbacks in the NFL right now.

Tebow will not lose a game when he has the ball. On the contrary, he may be the best at winning one. That is a powerful combination. Nonetheless, there are still doubters. Broncos Vice President and NFL Hall of Fame quarterback John Elway said that Tebow needs to improve as a passer. I am starting to think it is the other way around."

Edwin Torres thinks that Tebow needs to become a worse passer.

After skimming the combine results, I'm all for Janoris Jenkins unless Claiborne happens to fall to us. Off-field baggage be damned.

If not him, I honestly wouldn't mind Luke Kuechly. The guy is a tackling machine and ran a 4.5 40 ... which is way faster than I would have thought. With Connor gone and Davis a wildcard, we could use another stud LB.

Kuechly & Beason on the field together in a 4-3?

Grabbing Jenkins at 9 when there's a decent chance he'll still be there at 40?

When you're talking about the team that traded up to grab Edwards about 3 rounds too soon & doled out that kind of contract to Deangelo, who knows?

No way in hell Jenkins is there in the second. I bet he doesn't get past Dallas' pick (14). He's arguably the best cover CB in the draft and seems to put his past behind him (at least according to the buzz at the combine). He's also shutdown some of the best. He faced A.J. Green, Julio Jones and Alshon Jeffries last season, and those three only averaged only 38 yards against him.

As for Kuechly, LBs are LBs ... you read and react and make tackles. Beason has played OLB before, and Kuechly would probably have no problem at OLB once he learned the system. Hell, TD was a safety in college. Kuechly is also supposedly one of the smartest players in the draft, for what it's worth

yeah he's just kind of crazy.

what about Brandon Hogan? the guy got a DUI and wasn't even close to healthy when he was drafted. so no one thinks Richardson would take a guy with way more talent, who happens to have a spotty past but has cleaned up his act? and he's got two good knees.

i don't think they'll draft Jenkins because of where they pick and the other options available. to me it seems ridiculous to say Richardson would never draft him.

"On June 1, 2009, Jenkins was arrested near a bar by Gainesville Police for fighting and resisting arrest after punching a man in the head around 2 AM. Police were forced to use a taser on Jenkins after fighting escalated. When asked why the fight started, Jenkins told police it was because he thought someone was going to steal the gold chain around his neck.

On April 23, 2011, Jenkins was cited by a Gainesville police officer and charged with misdemeanor marijuana possession. He was cited for the same violation in January 2011, and paid a $316 fine. He was arrested in May 2009 during a downtown Gainesville fight that resulted in probation and community service. On April 26, 2011, he was dismissed by the Florida Gators football team, due to his second drug related arrest in 3 months."

eh, not so bad. getting caught with weed twice so quickly is more of a concern than the actual weed. he was probably just being dumb.

as to the fights, if anyone has ever been to Gainesville, they would not be shocked that these things happened to Jenkins. there was a crack pipe in my hotel parking lot when i went there. and also pretty sure someone was filming a porno in one of the rooms. this was all very close to UF's campus.
