"go to bottom" and "go to top" and similar links are meant to help people using screen-readers and other assistive technology; the idea is that the screen-reader would say something like "skip to article" or something so that the user could just go to that link and start hearing the article rather than waiting for the screen-reader to finish reading out all the nav-links.
