Wish they could lock him up for a few years. like 2015 or so. Wonder if he want to be a head coach somewhere before he retires.

He's already said he wants to be a head coach again and he's told Gott and Yow as much....In all likelihood we've only got him for one more year.

Promoted to Associate Head Coach. Hopefully there's enough of a raise involved to keep him around a couple of more seasons.

I've known Coach Lutz since his days at Pfeiffer when i was kid and used to go to basketball camp there. He was always a really cool down to earth guy.

Now I was a nice player when i was 9-10 years old, but I've always been small so it's not like I was likely to become a college athlete or anything.

Fast forward 6 years later and I'm at UNCC for basketball camp. First day of camp he comes up to talk to me and remembers my name. That always struck me as crazy. *How the hell does he remember a ten year old kid six years later. Guy must be some sort of genius.

* I did have an incident at Pfeiffer where a future NBA player (Lakers, Grizzlies, and Trailblazers) and radio announcer for the Blazers girlfriend called 911 on me. So that might have more to do with it than the skills competitions I used to win as a young pup. But still, really nice guy. Totally understanding about the incident.

fairly tame. Antonio Harvey had a really powerful water gun and he was just destroying us with it every chance he got. We'd retaliate with cups of water, balloons, etc but we really needed his high pressure gun. I devised a scheme to break into his dorm room while he was at breakfast and steal the gun with my buddy. We broke in (i think pfeiffer was on the honor system with no locked dorm rooms?) somehow and were searching for the gun. My buddy sat on the bed while we were looking and i saw someone rustle in the bed. We ran out of the room and she called 911.

I was like 4'10, 65 lbs probably. Cops came though and he had to settle it. Pretty sure Harvey got in trouble for having a girl in the dorms during camp haha. I felt bad about it so to make up for it I'd trade for him in NBA Live '95 and get him 10ppg even though he really sucked in that game.

Quote :
"N.C. State promoted Bobby Lutz to associate head coach of the men’s basketball team on Friday.

The former head coach at UNC Charlotte, Lutz helped first-year Wolfpack coach Mark Gottfried win 24 games and reach the Midwest Regional semifinals of the NCAA tournament this past season. Lutz, 54, is in charge of the team’s advanced scouting and is considered by his peers as one of the top strategists in the game.

His recruiting connections helped the Pack keep McDonald’s All-American guard Tyler Lewis in the fold after the coaching change last summer and to land transfer guard Alex Johnson.

“Bobby played a vital role in our team’s success on the court this season and our success on the recruiting trail,” Gottfried said in a statement released by the school. “He adds an enormous amount of experience and expertise to our staff.”

Lutz is the winningest coach (218-158) in Charlotte history and took the 49ers to the NCAA tournament five times in 12 seasons but was let go by his alma mater after the 2009-10 season. He still has two years remaining on his contract with Charlotte. He has one year left on his contract with N.C. State.

“I really enjoyed my first year at NC State,” Lutz said in a statement released by the school. “The people associated with the university are great and it’s a pleasure to be a member of a staff that is so unselfish and has the same goals: winning championships and helping our players succeed. I look forward to being a part of the Wolfpack’s continued success and I’m excited about the future.”"

People would have told you NC State was a dead end job, then a first year coach with a talented crew came in and took us to a sweet 16 in year one.

really? i didn't realize the RBC Center/PNC Arena was a dank old pit and that Raleigh was in the middle of goddamn nowhere. Also, that fans don't give a shit about the program and you're lucky to get 5,000 people to a game.

It was a school who hadn't tasted success in 30 years with two basketball powerhouses on either side that no one ever thought could be contended with for recruits or fandom.

And yet...

success will put VTech in a position to pack house every game. It just has to start with a coach who will seriously bring it.

Which is exactly why it's not a dead end job.

Success brings fans, brings facilities, brings rivalries.

You're taking "dead end" too literally

That program has absolutely nothing going for it other than playing in the ACC. See also: Boston College

Compared to other offers he's likely to receive as his stock improves, it'll take far too much time and effort to turn that program into a winner.

At least they somewhat care about basketball in Virginia. I would say it's a better job than Clemson for that sole reason (and that there is better/more high school basketball talent in that State...plus they could poach the NC leftovers).

I don't think the Vtech job is as bottom of the barrel as some of you think it is. Is it a great job? Nope. Could they turn it into a decent program?? Sure...and it wouldn't be as difficult as some may think.

VT and BC are undoubtedly the worst overall bball programs in the ACC...and #3 really isn't close.

You have never met a VT fan, have you?
I live less than 1.5 hours from blacksburg and everyone around here is a VT fan. Maybe 5% could be considered basketball fans. The alums I know don't even give a shit about basketball. You aren't going to get people to drive twice a week to blacksburg to watch them play.

It is a much worse job than Clemson. The only thing the program has going for it is that it's in the ACC.

There's actually a large VT fan base down here in south Carolina and they are very knowledgeable and care about ball. Clemson fans down here don't even know that Purnell left

These people who care a shit ton about VT basketball obviously don't go to games. I don't think they could sell out if they went undefeated for 10 years in a row.
