I'm gonna take a step back and make a few comments; not on pink slime specifically, but on the food industry as a whole as it relates to the consumer. This is going to fall into the category of tl;dr so proceed at your own risk.

A lot of people like to point fingers at the food industry and government and claim conspiracies and such and that everyone is out to get us. The truth is that the food industry is driven by the consumer. Pink slime exists in the first place because the consumer: #1 wants cheap food, #2 wants to buy a package of soft, red ground beef that will stay good in their fridge for a week, and #3 can't be trusted to cook it properly. Therefore, the food industry responds to all of those factors and what you get is pink slime. Now the consumer is back to bitching so the process will really just start all over again, but I digress.

A lot of people like to pick one little facet of the industry (organic, all natural lol, locally grown, additive free, whatever the fuck) and go on a little crusade for it, when they actually have no idea what the bigger fucking picture is.

For example: "The food industry is stupid, you should do something to get more healthy food like whole grains in the diet of consumers!!!"

Okay, we can just straight up give you whole grain but most people won't eat that shit because they don't like the taste. So, we mill it into flour and assuming no part of the grain is lost (lol) we then have this whole grain flour. Now, we can bake it or add it into something or make a bar out of it, but if you add any heat to it you have lost nutrients, B vitamins for example. But we need those nutrients right? So let's add the B vitamins back in, right? WRONG, because now you've alienated a whole segment of the consumer base that wants NO additives and NO processed foods blah blah blah and the cycle continues.

Speaking of additives, lets remove them ALL from our diet. Please, bring back rickets when you remove Vit D fortification from milk. Please, bring on the neural tube defects when you remove folic acid fortification from flour. Please, can we please bring back goiter and get rid of iodized salt. Goiter, by the way, is making a comeback in people that are responding too drastically to the low sodium craze. What a twisted web this all is! And sure, we can remove preservatives, but keep in mind that the food you bought today should probably be eaten within the next few days. And that entire loaf of bread you bought, yeah, once we remove the enzymes that act as anti-staling agents you're going to need to eat that loaf in a about two days unless you're happy eating stale bread. Then you can go out and buy another loaf...damn, this is getting expensive, right?

Meanwhile, there are bigger problems in this world, such as how do we feed starving cultures that will refuse to break tradition and eat anything but fucking corn that they grow themselves. Children walking around with kwashiorkor, etc How are we going to feed the people that are already living in this world? Much less the population growth that will be seen over the next 50 years. That's a real problem, and we've got wackos out their saying that we need to move to 100% local and organic farming. Yeah, that'll feed the world right there lol.

There is such distrust in the food industry that is brought on by media spinning stories that I just don't even know how to react to it. We so readily choose to distrust the industry yet people quote media outlets with no sound scientific evidence, sensationalizing stories using the unfounded drivel of quacks as "evidence". Example: questionable scientific method and downright unethical statistics lead to the conclusion that compound X might correlate with incidence of cancer in high doses. Media: "Compound X causes cancer." Consumer: Raises fist at food industry and freaks out. Why be so trusting of the media? They are in this to make money just like everyone else!

The U.S. food industry provides the cheapest and safest food in the world. We have food rotting on the docks when it could be feeding starving children and that's one of the places research dollars should be going, not to figuring out how to make your all-natural (LOL) organic granola bar not cost so much or making your ground beef look good, taste good, and idiot proof. When I walk into a grocery store, I'm still amazed and thankful that I can walk to the left and take my pick of fresh produce. Then I can turn to the right and carefully pick and choose from what processed goods I feel will make my life easier and more convenient, without having to base my entire diet on it. It's a fucking miracle and marvel of the modern world in my opinion.

I've read the science, real science. Hell, I've performed some of it. I've had long conversations with people that are on the forefront of all of these battles. These are people who care deeply about what they're doing and want to solve the problems that really matter in our food supply. So, I'm basing my opinion entirely on scientific and epidemiological evidence in combination with the first hand experiences many of these problem solvers have recounted to me in person. How do I respond? I whistled for a cab, and when it came near, the license plate said “fresh” and there were dice in the mirror. If anything I could say that this cab was rare, but I thought “naw forget it, yo holmes to bel-air!” I pulled up to the house about seven or eight and I yelled to the cabbie “yo homes smell ya later!” Looked at my kingdom, I was finally there. To settle my throne as the prince of bel-air. So, take it for what it is. Just excuse me if I roll my eyes at the mass of people who hang on every word the media feeds them while they mouth breathe their way through countless google searches and blogs.

srly, if anything pink slime might be less gross than regular ground beef. and disinfecting packaged food with (omg!) chemicals is pretty routine. Maybe they could have just irradiated with more gamma rays instead...


if you buy those little cut up carrots and potatoes, they get soaked in lye to peel the vegetables and give them their characteristic shape/surface texture

if you've ever eaten from a container of deli slaw or potato salad or whatever, that had bleach dripped through it before the mayo got applied. just two tiny examples.


of course those products are gross. but that's what people get for being lazy/busy/whatever your excuse is to go buy real vegetables and peel them or get a quality cut of meat with the bone in it, finish the prep and make use of the trimmings as you will, and quit making all the demand for the stuff in the first place. that's what makes me laugh about this pink slime matter, it's an extremely avoidable product. if you want ground beef, get it ground fresh and get it in the fridge within 2 hours in case the machinery is contaminated. And America, you're either too good for that stuff or you aren't. people expecting to pay dog food prices for meat and getting outraged when that's what it turns out to be...

Well, you brought it up as though reading that was such a tax on your time. Well, don't read it then. Either way, here we are, both on here posting away in the middle of the afternoon. So, bringing up the whole "we have jobs" argument was just a little strange.

This shit was common knowledge to any educated consumer in the past 10 - 20 years. The techniques used to lower costs in the fast food industry have bled out into the casual dining restaurants and grocery stores. That was the whole premise of the book Fast Food Nation. Whole Foods capitalized on this fact and has grown steadily because of it. I don't know why this one specific things gets so many people up in arms. The fact that cows are slaughtered with shit all over them and pieces of the hides get ground up into the meat is the real problem. The solution should be to figure out how not to slaughter the cows in shit, not dump ammonia all over the beef products after slaughter.

That's true in some cases, but a lot of people just want the food to actually be food. Not something that is ground up with fillers and flavorings and molded into a fake meat texture, or fake potato texture. You can barely buy anything from a mass market producer that actually is the chicken or cracker it claims to be on the box. Is it so fucking hard for restaurants and grocery stores to start with actual vegetables and meat?

There's a difference in removing all the aromatic compounds like the benzoates etc and removing all additives including Vitamins. Nothing I buy has preservatives and yeah shit goes bad quicker but it tastes a hell of a lot better.

Yep and that's why I've pretty much given up with buying processed foods. It's not as convenient but my body seems to appreciate it.

The pink stuff squirting into that box looks basically exactly like hot dogs and bologna looks like before they put it in the casing.

The only weird thing about that pic to me is they are squirting it directly into a cardboard box. That shit's definitely going to soak through.

There are two pink slimes


The pink slime the industry is referring to doesn't look or feel like pink slime.




The pink slime that the people are outraged over is the pink slime that is actually pink and is slime.




The industry thinks we're stupid, and for the most part, most people are. Not me.

it has been confirmed repeatedly that the picture you keep posting...that EVERYBODY keeps posting and seem to think is the ONLY available evidence of what pink slime looks like...is actually chicken going through the AMR process...

it's what they use to make chicken nuggets...


either way, i'll still eat it


the media doesn't care about this anymore...so you shouldn't either....just let it go

^Now that the media are off the case, IMO the entities who had pledged to stop using the stuff should renege on their promises; and indeed, the "lean finely-textured beef" that looks like Laura's Lean is precisely what "pink slime" referred to in 2002 when the term was coined.
(BTW that first pic in DumbasSxBoY's latest post is not actual LFTB because as nutritious as it is, it does not by itself constitute the entirety of any processed-beef product.)

Basically I'll stop caring once the deleterious effects of the hysteria are reversed.

Just buy the organic beef and dont worry about it. Pink slime is only part of the problem, the drugs and feed they give nonorganic beef is also and issue.

Society was mad at #2.
The beef industry renamed the good meat in #1 to the same name as #2.
There is no way for #1 to have that name because it's neither pink, nor slime. It's red, and grinded.


Now everyone is successfully confused about what society is mad about.

There is a segment of society that read Fast Food Nation 10 years ago and then became obsessed with researching the food industry. Most people in that group decided they didn't want to eat meat crammed so packed that when slaughtered it ends up in a bath of shit before getting turned into hamburger. The solution to being able to sell the meat was to mix it with ammonia--that's a great fucking idea!

Yeah, it went viral because of the mixup, but it's still disgusting and the solution should be to eat less meat of higher quality than to try and clean the meat by mixing it with noxious substances. The only reason those practices are legal is the FDA is in the pocket of BigAg. That's not even mentioning most of the same meat is pumped full of antibiotics leading to antibiotic resistant superbugs.
