yup a wolf spider. And it is not really a pet per se, just keeping them until we get our garden going. This gal has a 2.5 inch diameter including her legs. certainly not the largest we have kept.
Fang was way bigger (use the brick in background as size reference):
I am however getting a rose hair tarantula next week, which is one of the most common tarantulas to keep.

We were discussing it and as for size reference there is a rolley poley in the second pic at the bottom right, so looks like a medium size wolf spider. Those shits can get huge though for sure. 3/12/2012 1:24:29 PM |

I had wolf spiders all over my house in England.
I wouldn't have minded them if they would have eaten all the slugs that lived in the house as well. 3/12/2012 1:25:35 PM |

thats pretty cool
when i used to keep spiders and things from outside they just die, much less successfully reproduce
its just not my thang i guess, i lack a brown thumb 3/12/2012 1:28:17 PM |

those things are too F.S.T. "fast" for my liking.... I have a pic sommers of one at nearly 4" with its legs doing the 4-forward, 4-rearward thing.... too fast for their size, too scary. would rather stumble on a black widow than one of these 3/12/2012 1:29:10 PM |

^ no way, we have a lot of black widows in our garage and around our house, they get everywhere and will move indoors too. My dog barely survived a black widow bite and would not wish that on anyone's pet their family.
that being said, my so has kept a few black widows. 3/12/2012 1:31:31 PM |

They freaked me out when I first moved in.
Quite a few wolf spiders had taken up shop in the light fixture in the living room ceiling (one of those translucent domes) when the previous tenants moved out.
I cut on the light and it cast wolf-spider shadows all over the floor. 3/12/2012 1:33:39 PM |

yea, wolf spiders can definitely get indoors too, but they are not poisonous like black widows and eat other nuisances
here was our black widow before collection

Yeah... i had a brown recluse bite me...
Fucking thing ate a hole in my arm about the size of a ping pong ball.
needless to say... i kill poisonous spiders now.
I'm down with most of the big ones but if i see that hour glass or a spindly little brown fucker...

I used to have a bad problem with wolf spiders when I first moved into my house. After soiling several pairs of boxers, I now have a Perimeter of Chemical Death around my house, and have not seen a single one since. 3/12/2012 2:30:20 PM |

Oh, dont get me wrong, i still get creeped the fuck out
But when you stumble upon a widow, after shrieking like a middle school girl at a Twilight premier and jump backward a few feet... nothing really happens other than it might crawl away..... a wolf spider may dart & jump.... out of the way or on my leg, etc.
shit now ive got the creeps. 3/12/2012 3:53:18 PM |

Wolf Spider, yes. Black Window, HELL no!
I think it's awesome that you're housing spiders for the winter, but I draw the line at highly venomous ones. 3/12/2012 3:56:15 PM |

those motherfuckers will rear up on their little back legs and hiss at you!
they JUMP TOWARDS YOU, not run away...
or am i living in a sci fi original movie?
one time there was one behind my shampoo in the goddamn shower. imagine the shenanigans that ensued after i grabbed that bottle... 3/12/2012 5:54:47 PM |

Exactly. One of the coolest things I got to watch was a garden spider wrap up a dying moth I threw in its nest.... but holy mother of God, I turn into a spaz if I see a wolf spider, brown recluse, etc, in the house. I would milk 1,000 venomous snakes if it meant never having one of those in my living quarters ever again3/12/2012 6:16:36 PM |
