I mean, the author pretty much spelled it out in the book that the kid was black. Short of directly calling the girl black I'm not sure how she could have made it anymore obvious.

Watching the movie, without reading the books, I didn't really think of it. The girl playing Rue was so freaking adorable and she just really stood out to me as so sweet! I think she was a great little actress for the part, she really made it her own.
