The police are one of the last bastions of the good old boy network. Piles and piles of anecdotal evidence.
Do you have anything to contradict this or are you just claiming that I'm wrong?

Just read some of the links in that quick google search. It's not a rare occasion. It happens over, and over, and over, and over again. Hell, frequently they don't even have to go to a new department because police unions are so ridiculously powerful that it's difficult to keep guys fired even after egregious errors or blatantly criminal behavior. 9/6/2012 11:37:29 AM |

Contradictory statements. If you're being investigated as any citizen would be for excessive deadly force, the consequences would be far worse than getting canned.

Well if you get canned for a deadly force incident, there is about a 99.9% you are going to charged as well. Or are you suggesting that law enforcement officers should have their right to due process waived?
As far as the whole "professional courtesy" in hiring, the agencies that pick these guys are not respectable agencies. They are usually small, poorly funded agencies that scrape the bottom of the barrel to fill their vacancies anyways.
I know a handful of people who have been fired or given the "option" (resign or be fired, which a career death sentence) who had to seek life outside of law enforcement. 9/6/2012 2:44:37 PM |

I know I've seen this posted before, but I saw it again today and it seems relevant to this thread.
A US citizen should be able to walk the streets freely without harassment from the police. For the purposes of this thread I don't care how you feel about the rest of the Giuliani/Bloomberg/Kelly agenda of control; but if you don't have a problem with this you're a poor example of an American citizen.

Not exactly "police brutality" related, but a site I recommend in case anyone isn't familiar is "Photography Is Not A Crime" or PINAC:

Holding those in authority accountable for their actions is always difficult, but Carlos Miller has been at it for years now and his blog is finally starting to receive some national attention. Lots of great videos from all over the country displaying blatant abuse of power - even here in North Carolina. Recent video from Salisbury which still has not received any local media attention from what I can tell.

I see both sides of that; on one hand it sounds like you have a barricaded subject (unknown if there is a hostage and this is an inference based solely on the "command center" references) and a tactical advantage could save lives but on the other, I don't know what (in NC) recourse you would have if you wanted to take up a position in their home and they said nope. The last hostage situation I dealt with, everyone just evacuated their homes. 7/5/2013 3:34:20 PM |

I still don't understand sending in a SWAT team for most dope raids; SWAT teams rescue people not dope. Now don't get me wrong, if there is a serious threat of violence, go for it but the rise of popping bangs and blowing up doors for some crack is crazy. Is it a rush? Fuck yeah, but its dangerous as hell. There are other ways to get in a house; create a ruse that gets the occupants outside and then go inside. How about a fake police beating in the yard next door? People love to run outside their crackhouse and WorldStar that shit. But they will flush the dope! Cool, make a better case you dolt; how about you make a bunch of well documented buys and the search warrant and subsequent will just act as the pièce de résistance and not your whole case. /rant. 7/7/2013 9:20:17 PM |

As the population of people with nothing to lose increases, the more likely you'll start seeing shit grow beyond protests and "occupy" type events.
As various facets of government continue to increase heavy handed enforcement against average people while those with power and wealth aren't held accountable, the rule of law becomes voided and people stop giving a shit.
Every day it seems like the US government reveals itself to be more and more like those countries we invaded to 'liberate from tyranny'
P.S. oh hai NSA stooge reading this 7/9/2013 2:45:24 PM |

^ agreed
that means an american spring is a few decades away, assuming the rate of US decline stays constant.
but it could also happen earlier if there is some strong catalyst, like some horrible police brutality or something similar which spawns protests which go viral and engulf the whole country in flames.
in egypt they said 1 in 5 or 6 people was protesting. so if 50-60 mil americans pour out onto the streets at the same time, it might have the same effect. but, america is also huge, and the pop density is 2.5 times smaller than in egypt. so to be able to depose a gov by sheer force of number of people on the streets, it seems as if it would require anywhere between at least 100 million and 150 million people out simultaneously for several days/weeks in a row.
not gonna happen in that way, in that case. so the catalyst scenario is most likely, if anything like that were to happen. 7/10/2013 1:50:43 PM |

Kurtis636 All American 14984 Posts user info edit post |
it's not really tangential, I think there's a pretty direct correlation between police being told they're soldiers in a war (war on drugs, war on crime, war on terror, etc.) and the US vs. Them mentality you see in police so much more now. Community policing and cops actually knowing the people they serve used to be a real thing. Now they see us all as potential criminals. That attitude makes it more likely that they'll use excessive force, cover up for those that do, shoot your dog for no reason, etc.
Police militarization is a huge, huge problem that has had predictably catastrophic results.
Radley Balko's blog is a great read btw, a lot of really good pro civil liberty stuff in his archives from before he narrowed his focus to police militarization. 7/12/2013 12:02:27 PM |

Quote : | "A 40-year-old police officer in San Antonio, Texas is facing charges of felony sexual assault after a 19-year-old woman accused him of handcuffing and raping her during a traffic stop over the weekend.
According to an arrested warrant obtained by the San Antonio Express-News, Officer Jackie Len Neal pulled over the teen, telling her that her car was reported stolen.
Even though the woman produced a sales slip for the vehicle, Neal insisted on patting her down. The woman told him she felt uncomfortable with the pat down and asked for a female officer, but he ignored her, the warrant said. The woman was allegedly groped, placed in handcuffs and then taken to the back of his patrol car. At the time of the alleged assault, video cameras mounted in Neal’s cruiser were not functioning because a hard drive was missing. However, a GPS tracking system did corroborate that the police cruiser was parked for 18 minutes on Betty Street as the woman had claimed.
At a press conference on Saturday, Police Chief William McManus said that Neal would have known the video recording system was not functioning in his cruiser.
“I can’t express in words how disappointed and angry I am about this. I am at a loss for words,” McManus explained. “I am outraged. This is a punch in the eye to the Police Department.”
Neal was arrested by SAPD and Special Victims Unit detectives at around 2 a.m. on Saturday. The San Antonio Police Department asked the FBI to investigate possible civil rights violations in the case.
McManus confirmed that Neal had been suspended in September for dating an 18-year-old, who had joined the Police Explorer program in preparation for a law enforcement career. He had also been accused of sexual assault while on duty several years earlier, but the woman refused to cooperate with a police investigation and the charges were dropped.
The police chief called on any other victims to speak out.
“I praise the victim for having the courage to come forward and having the confidence in the SAPD to handle the case effectively,” he remarked.
“There is no such thing a consensual sex on duty,” McManus pointed out. “I feel silly even saying that we won’t tolerate it. Of course we won’t tolerate it. There is no gray area. This is a criminal offense.”
Neal was released after posting a $20,000 bond. The police department will continue to pay him until he is indicted.
