I always break my number down to how many years I have been sexually active whenever I am questioned about it. I lost my virginity when I was 19, so I have been sexually active for 14 years. Using that logic, I have had sex with barely over 1 person a year. That usually works.

My girlfriend was put off a bit in the beginning when she found out I had sex with 15 girls (she has slept with 9 dudes). Then I found out she lost her virginity at 13, so just threw that one back at her and that pretty much stopped the discussion.
