A lady that was the first to run up to the pilot was just interviewed:

"I ran up to him and asked him if he was okay. He said "I'm not sure yet. I'm sorry for ruining your home"

Haha. Classic.

Pilot was in the jet when it hit...then ejected...to minimize the damage to surrounding area. Last thing he said before he ejected was sorry.

Three injuries, no deaths.

Navy aviators FTW.

While I know that there are military airstrips in the area, there's nothing in the original article that indicates any proximity to a runway, let alone a proximity that'd assume a takeoff/landing issue. You could tell me that an F-15 crashed in Goldsboro, and I wouldn't be able to assume it was a takeoff/landing issue at Seymour Johnson, because the area that constitutes Goldsboro is simultaneously 15 feet and 15 miles from the runways at the base.

An off duty Coast Guardsman happened to be across the street when the jet hit. He entered the building along with a civilian and they cut the downed pilot from his chute and carried him outside.

^Ridiculous.

A passenger jet can crash in a neighborhood but nobody calls for the airport to be shut down.

Guess what?

Not exactly. The Blues fly the original Hornet (I think they're A+ models, although they might be C models. Not exactly sure, though there isn't much difference).

This was a Super Hornet...either an E/F/G model (probably an F model, since there is talk of 2 crewmembers ejecting, and they haven't said it was a Growler...plus I happen to know that most, if not all, of the fighters at Oceana are E/F models.)

At any rate, the Supers are a half-generation newer and a shitload larger than the original Hornet. They are a very significantly different airplane.

Also, the USMC is the only D-model operator. The nearest ones are a MCAS Beaufort, SC.

^^^Oh OK, -106 is the FRS ("RAG", if you're familiar with that term). They train new pilots and WSOs right out of flight school in how to fly their fleet jets (Hornets/Super Hornets).

I didn't know they operated "baby" Hornets there or that they trained Marines. I thought all Marine Hornet dudes went through VMFAT-101 out at Miramar. That's kinda weird--I'm about 99.9% positive that the Navy doesn't have any "baby" Hornets in operational squadrons--just a few in the FRS training squadron...and maybe a handful in aggressor squadrons or test & evaluation squadrons.

^^ Oh man, I love the flight instructor gig, for a variety of reasons. The only thing I don't like is the lack of deployments. Well, that and I miss 550+ knots and occasionally shooting missiles and stuff, but the day to day life is about a million times better.

[Edited on April 6, 2012 at 11:37 PM. Reason : and the XC opportunities are glorious]

___________

Shit, it looks like I'm wrong, unless wikipedia is not up to date. Looks like there are a few USN squadrons still flying legacy Hornets. I couldn't tell you the last time I saw a USN legacy Hornet or met a current USN A/B/C/D model pilot or WSO. I know for sure we don't train any more WSOs for baby Hornets.

I don't think you know much about air station Oceana, they've been trying to shift it to surrounding bases and potentially close the place for a long time, years, due to density development. It affects Cherry Point because they'd long suggested moving a lot of the resources there (partially because they don't have the density development problems that Oceana has).

^^ the base has been there forever...the town, against the advice of the Navy, has built all up around the base. Then people buy houses a mile from te end of the runway of the east coast master jet base, with hundreds if fighters, and conplain about noise.

"VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) — Fire officials say they have accounted for everyone who lived at a Virginia apartment complex where a Navy fighter jet crashed.

Capt. Tim Riley is the battalion chief and spokesman for the Virginia Beach fire department. He said Saturday morning that the last three people at the apartment complex had been accounted for, and that there appeared to be no fatalities.

Riley says crews are not actively searching for anyone, but that could change if there may have been a guest in an apartment that authorities don't know about.

The fighter jet was being piloted by a student and his trainer Friday when the plane malfunctioned over Virginia's most populated city. The men ejected moments before the jet crashed into the apartment complex."

Why?

It crashed during the day when most people are at work/school.

Now if it had crashed into a dorm or a retirement community, then that would be amazing.

But I still kinda see your point you are trying to make.
