This has WIN written all over it. I am not paying $800 for a grill, wont happen, maybe if I had everything else in the world I ever wanted and a huge covered patio to keep it out of the rain.
I got my father one of these for fathers day and he LOVES it.

I know this has nothing to do with a grill, but it's sorta vaguely related, so I'm asking here.
The current tenant of a townhome I'm moving into has offered to sell me a clay chimney in her backyard. People tell me that you can cook on these things (like, what, just put a rack ontop?). She wants $20 for it, but I have no idea how much these things sell for. It looks close to this, but probably lower quality.
It would be cool to have in the backyard unless I was able to build a fire pit, or actually get a grill when I have disposable income. What do you think, worth it?

i got my clay chiminea at a street fair (from a vendor, not used) for $40...it's not the greatest in the world, but i really liked having it when i lived in an apartment and wanted to sit outside when it was chilly

i got that one for $300. the grilling surface is actually bigger than I thought it would be, but the entire unit itself is still smaller than other grills.
space was a factor for me and this unit can actually be unbolted from it's stand and used as a portable grill (though it's larger size makes that somewhat impractical). but since i'm on the 3rd level i needed something that wouldn't be a bitch to get down again when the time arises. 7/5/2012 4:05:37 PM |

My ribs (never tried it on anything but pork baby backs, but I'm sure it works for any and all):
Use paper towel to remove moisture from surface. Rub with white vinegar and let sit 5-10 minutes. While it's sitting, assemble this rub:
1 cup brown sugar 1/4 cup paprika 1 tablespoon garlic powder 1 tablespoon onion powder 1 tablespoon salt 1 tablespoon pepper 1 tablespoon chili powder optional: 1 teaspoon cayenne powder (I usually skip)
Get your broiler pan ready. Fill ~1" with 50/50 water and beer (or cider).
Apply the rub to the meat copiously, fully cover so you pretty much can't see the meat anymore. Place on broiler pan, place pan on grill. 250-275 for 1 hour. Check the pan occasionally and if it's running dry add more water.
You would think this makes a steaming effect but it really doesn't. The ribs will come out lightly charred and properly sticky due to the brown sugar.
Gently baste BBQ sauce of your choice (I prefer Open Pit) onto each side, and cook another 30 minutes. I say gently so that you don't scrape off any of the rub. Anyway, do a second coat of sauce, and a final 30 minutes, for a total of 2 hours on the grill. Done. They'll be very tender and easy to eat but not quite fall-right-off-the-bone (I actually dislike them that tender).

oh my...that's exactly what I was thinking about getting. There's no way I would spend $1200 on a green egg, and some of the other versions I saw were the $800 you mentioned.
