My opinion is that we should quadruple the budget for NASA and set up permanent infrastructure to support colonies on the moon and mars. I know that it's expensive, and as a fiscal conservative it seems that i'm contradicting myself, but the benefits of humans expanding beyond earth is very important in my opinion. 4/20/2012 10:09:59 AM |

Sad but true.
Quote : | "Huge bureaucracies are financed (with the aid money), corruption and complacency are promoted, Africans are taught to be beggars and not to be independent. In addition, development aid weakens the local markets everywhere and dampens the spirit of entrepreneurship that we so desperately need. As absurd as it may sound: Development aid is one of the reasons for Africa's problems. If the West were to cancel these payments, normal Africans wouldn't even notice. Only the functionaries would be hard hit. Which is why they maintain that the world would stop turning without this development aid. " |

The system of pooling resources for public services is unstable anyway. Public schools and everything like it is predicated on the existence of sufficient wealth in the pool of people it draws from, much like being a member of a rich family - this is exactly how the modern nation-state functions.
I think that it's perfectly fine to allow exclusively requirements, like having to pass an exam, or having a lifelong audit of contributions and withdrawals to social programs (and adjustments of entitlements if that's what they decide). But these would need to have audits to insure that they're applied equally for all people trying to enter the country, and that bureaucrats aren't making decisions about people's lives. This is a far far cry from what we have today.
Plus, immigrants living here illegally today use social services like public schools. We screw it all up by not addressing the issue in the first place. Governments should be forced to make a policy and apply it fairly instead of not addressing it and then allowing application of the law randomly at best, and in a corrupt nepotistic manner at worst.
Even if someone can't get citizenship, they should be entitled to the ability to move anywhere they please and have basically permanent residency, with protection from eviction or deportation. I wouldn't make any statement about what services they should be entitled to, or what tax structure they should be subject to (only that the tax/entitlement rules be applied equally to all and subject to public scrutiny). My belief is one of freedom of association. I should be able to buy land in Montana and create a commune and recruit globally for members, and deny governments the ability to obstruct such action.

the good thing is that if you don't want to waste your money on them, you don't have to.
although i will say that this opinion is dead wrong. I've seen sports make a difference in many lives over the years, and i'm not talking about the few people who go on to make a living playing pro sports.

okay, well that's your opinion then. i still think there's absolutely no reason to pay people millions of dollars to play ball (of any kind). and i have no desire or care whatsoever to watch sports in person or on tv, have never understood loyalty to a team (even if you went to the school), etc. sports just aren't my thing.
and this is an opinion thread. my opinion is not wrong, it's just not the same as yours.

The economics involved pretty much demand it. The skill set required to be a professional athlete are among the rarest in the world and millions and millions of people watch and are entertained by it.
Your opinion has no weight in determining player salary and is poorly thought out to boot.
Examine the economics of sports and then try to come up with a less stupid opinion. 4/20/2012 11:44:40 AM |

I think we would be a lot better off if we would hold mandatory community meetings, also having a free form part where you have to actually introduce yourself and talk to your neighbors.
At the same time, I hate HOAs. I'm not talking about property owners - I'm talking everyone who has residence in a certain city block.
